Show Junior High Tournament It has been brought to my attention at-tention that a number of Junior high school basketball tournaments tourna-ments will be held throughout the state, and I am wondering why St. George couldn't sponsor such a tournament. I remember ; j that one was held a number of years ago and that good sized crowds turned out for the games. At that time, I am told, six teams were brought in for a two-day, j six-game tournament with the finalists playing two games on one day. This feature brought some criticism with the result that the tournament was can-1 celled. . . Under the plan sug- J gested at this time, it is thought that it would be better to have an eight-team tournament and I carry it over a three-day period, thus making it so that each teamj only played one game each day. i With the conditions as they are at present, it might be necessary to have local people take the ball , players into their homes during the tournament. This shouldn't ' mean a hard, burden on anyone and should provide an opportunity ' for us to "sell" St. George and the j Dixie college. . . It surely; would be a looked-forward-to event ! in the lives of the players and students of the schools repres- ented and could help maintain the,' interest of the students in their I schools. . . Thost schools which ! : are closer, like Hurricane, Virgin ; Valley and Cedar, might take their students home nights, but -such teams as Las Vegas, Kanab, , Beaver and ' Panaca would need to stay, perhaps due to the gas- oline shortage some of the others might have to remain here during the tournament also. All of these teams have been to Junior High tournaments held here before, and undoubtedly would look forward to coming again. . . Since most ) of us will be unable to attend the state tournament this year, this s junior one would provide some i mighty interesting entertainment. . . . Incidentally, Coach Reed Blake has a mighty fine Junior J high team one that would rep-resent rep-resent the Woodward High in a commendable manner. . . How r about it, are there enough people ' interested in such a tournament I to help put it over? If so, I sug-' gest that you talk to your school : Principal, Coach, School Board 1 Members and Superintendent M. ! E. Moody. .. . Oh yes, if you want any further details, just ask "Church." |
