Show I & Farm I 1 WAR N EV7S 1 The farmer's share of the retail . dollar held at 58 cents, the highest high-est since 1919, for the period . from September to October, according ac-cording to a B. A. E. report which also pointed out that both payments pay-ments to farmers and retail : prices for farm food products rose less than one-half per cent from September to October. ; it has been necessary for the ' WPB to extend the campaign to establish "Victory Scrap Banks" in every community in the county, ' Phillip Foremaster, chairman of the Washington county US DA t war board explained today. C The demand by the armed ' forces for war materials has in-l in-l creased tremendously. To meet i this demand, mills are using more f scrap to produce steel than they ' are able to purchase. Therefore, i to avoid serious shortages during I the winter months it is impera- tive that the drive to establish ( Victory Scrap Banks be continued, Mr. Foremaster said. I The campaign is being held to establish a reserve scrap stock-f stock-f pile, or a scrap "ever-normal ' granary" in every community the country over. Present plans call I for 15 million tons to be col-f col-f lected before the end of this year about 200,000 tons more I than during the last half of 1942. t Last fall, the scrap drive had to f meet an immediate emergency; ! this year's drive is to assure ship-5 ship-5 builders, airplane manufacturers I and munitiops makers of enough I steel when it is needed. f The Army is cooperating by J furnishing trucks and personnel 5 to assist in picking up the scrap !J at local points. Volunteer salvage jf workers will visit homes, farms and factories throughout the state jand urge citizens to bring ob- jects of iron and steel, no longer if useful, to scrap yards where it X will be picked up by the Army and others to be taken to rail- roads for distribution to steel mills, Mr. Foremaster explained. 5 Never was our country's need 'vr for every last pound of steel that S can be produced, more critical. In ? this mechanized war, the destruc- tion of equipment on battle lines is staggering and unbelievable. M With the lives and safety of our m fighting men depending upon us, it is the patriotic duty of every sj citizen to respond during the drive 'is and help collect all scrap possible, Mr. Foremaster said. |
