Show American Business Is Behind the President By J. E. JONES WASHINGTON, D. C, Dec. 31 American business announces from a hundred thousand platforms that the President has its complete and loyal support and they are all for Victory. Workers by the millions are standing as one man behind the American government, and nearly all of them are leaving a few labor union executives to hold the trouble-bags in which closed-shops, closed-shops, wages and hours, have been put away until the day of complete com-plete Victory. "The Republican party will support sup-port President Roosevelt to a man, but it expects Senatorial, Congressional and state elections to be held next year and it (G. O. P.) will fight to win" Joseph W. Martin, chairman of the Republican committee. The American press stands today, to-day, as it always has in the past, as the main prop of communications communica-tions and as the dependable source for news. Censorship will not change the established legitimate policies of the Fourth Estate, or lesson the loyalty and efforts of the press to promote "the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity". This is a war led by great ships up in the air. A young Army Lieutenant from Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania who flew home from Washington Wash-ington for Christmas, explained he never had time to waste traveling trav-eling on trains. He typifies the American youth of today, always in a hurry, out of patience with the old ways to win a war. Amer ican unity moves on wings, for turkey, home or war. Your National Capitol in Washington Wash-ington is . armed as never before against enemies from the air. Assembly Line Will Win War The reassuring prediction that our assembly lines are on the way to win the war comes from an official of a great defense manufacturer, man-ufacturer, who also declares that : "at this grave hour the machine becomes the protector of people's right to work and live in a free America". "For more than a year since the President's proclamation of a national emergency," says Paul Garrett, vice president of General Gen-eral Motors, "we have been concentrating con-centrating on the 'make ready' stage of our defense program. As we enter 1942 there comes the assurance that materially and psychologically psy-chologically we have reached, the 'keep 'em rolling" stage. War production will gather momentum for the duration, backing up the skill, the courageous sacrifice, the fortitude of our men in arms." The General Motors official offers of-fers statistics to support his confidence con-fidence in American industry. Already Al-ready in World War II its production pro-duction lines have delivered to the Government $10,000,000 worth of war equipment, he reports. Not that much had even been ordered last March. It represents more than 5,000,000 man years of work. That would build 16 bands of super-highway from coast to coast. It would build 200 Boulder Dams. "War now is in war of horsepower," horse-power," Mr. Garrett adds. "And industry in the country has no equal in production of horsepower. Grand Coulee Dam will generate 2,400,000 horsepower. But last year the internal combustion engines en-gines of General Motors alone bulked 240,000,000 horsepower. That is 100 Grand Coulee Dams". Visualize from that the poten- , tial production for all of industry. ' Part of Public Debt You, your sweetheart, or maybe may-be it is the wife, and children, each are responsible for $521 of the national debt, that being the per-capita debt load of every inhabitant in-habitant of the continental United States. It is an increase of $41 for every person during the past year. That's the way the Federal government gov-ernment calculates the national debt at a new high record of $69,-162,000,000 $69,-162,000,000 at the close of the last fiscal year. Production Runs High All the information released by OPM shows that production of all war materials is up to expectations. expecta-tions. The United States may have been a little slow in speeding up the wheels but they are zipping pretty swift right now. |
