Show Utah Historical Quarterly Devotes Section To Dixie Dixie, Utah came in for a goodly portion of consideration in the July-October issue of the Utah Historical Quarterly, just off the press, with journals and stories of local people and by local writers. writ-ers. It isn't unusual to have an item or two from this section, ' but it is unusual to have so much of the enlarged issue devoted to one section. The articles include "Escalante's Itinerary", by Herbert Auerbach, which covers that famous explorers' explor-ers' day by day travels from Santa Fe and back, from July. 29 to Dec. 31, 1876. Spanish gold mine stories are highlighted by an article on other Spanish mines by William R. Palmer of Cedar City. "Ancient Mound Grains", includes writings from William J. Snow and others, and Jessie K. Empey of this city writes, "The Last Squaw Fight", of this area as told her by Frank Gillespie, whose history she is covering. Included in the Journals are those of John J. Davies, James Starley, Robert Gardner and Edwin Ed-win Stott Ackley, all from the southern part of the state. Mrs. Empey has received several sev-eral letters from the personnel of the historical society who were happy to rceive and print details de-tails of this last battle over a native bride-to-be. |
