Show Washington Co. Municipal Elections Accorded Unusual Interest In St. George. Enterprise, Santa Clara " Democratic Landslide Features Fea-tures Election Returns in St. George Vote Tuesday Unusual interest was manifested manifest-ed Tuesday in the municipal elections elec-tions throughout the county and more votes were polled in most of the precincts than were anticipated antici-pated by forecasters. In St. George the Democratic ticket won a sweeping victory over the opposing Citizens' ticket, E. Eric Snow displacing D. C. Watson as mayor with a vote of 663 to 244. Mr. Watson has served as the city's chief executive for the past two terms. Rex R. Frei defeated Stanley Schmutz in the contest for 4-year councilman by a tally of 530 to 375; and Mathew M. Bentley, Vernon Ver-non Worthen and Irvin Milne are the victorious 2-year councilmen with returns of 633, 616, and 611 respectively. Their opponents were R. N. (Nat) Ashby, Rudger C. Atkin and Melvin E. Cox, who were accorded 265, 279 and 265 votes each, respectively. City Treasurer Clair S. Terry and City Recorder H. Stevens and Cecil Sullivan; Sul-livan; Recorder Joseph Hinton; Treasurer. Thomas Eagar. A full hundred per cent of the ballots favored Mr. Sandberg for mayor, and all incumbent office holders were retained. Two tickets were on the ballot at Santa Clara, successful candidates candi-dates being chosen from both: Norman Gubler was chosen as board president with Clarence Moss to serve as vice- president. Sylvan Graff, Cecil Frei and Wendell Wen-dell Tobler make up the balance of the board. Other candidates running were Elgin Graff, Lester Wittwer, Grant A. Graff and Shelby Frei. Results at Ivins establish Max Hunt as town president, with Weston Hafen, Walter Winsor, William Bundy and Harmon Gubler Gub-ler Jr. to serve as councilmen. Edwin Stucki was elected as justice of the peace, Frank Hunt is constable and Dan Hafen as treasurer. Others on the ticket were Reuben Reu-ben Ence, E. J, R-ober, Milo Ence, and Vernon Tobler. Three tickets, the Citizens', the People's and the Progressive, featured fea-tured this year's election at Enterprise, En-terprise, where high interest was shown in the contest this year. Two officers were chosen from the Citizens' ticket and three from the People's, leaving the third group as runner-up. Tallies were: For town president, Alta Truman Tru-man 43, Leland Huntsman 38 and Stella Holt 27; for trustees, Grant Clove 48, John Day 45, Ed L. Hunt 48, Albert Holt 39, Arnold Barlocker 38, Ila Terry 37, Dur-ward Dur-ward Hall 34, Wm. J. Lund and Gertrude Lund each 29, Maeser Terry 28, and Verna Holt 24. |
