Show News from Our Washington County People At Service Camps and the Nation's Battle Fronts By MABEL J ARMS R. McArthur Visits Here Ross McArthur, Electrican's Mate 3c says he finds it nice to have his feet on the good home state earth once again, after ten months of sea duty with the U. S. Navy. On his service ribbon rib-bon are two bronze stars, marking mark-ing his participation in two major combats, including the Saipan and Guam campaigns. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Moroni McArthur of St. George. His assignment is to help keep the electrical equipment of the ship operating smoothly, and he says this is really a job under combat duty. They had to give both Saipan and Guam a terrific pounding, he admits, and it will be a long time before these places can get back to normal. While he was home his sister, Mrs. Emil Gubler entertained in his honor at her home in Santa Clara and on Wednesday evening, his parents had a family dinner and party for him in St. George. He leaves this week end for Salt Lake City to visit relatives and friends, before returning to his ship. Pa fa (a Visit Bushnell Hospital "The cheerfulness of the boys at Bushnell hospital is something to make the civilians sit up and take notice," reports Cleo Sulli-ited Sulli-ited his nephew, Lieut. Paul Sul-van Sul-van of St. George, who with his wife and daughter, LaPrele, vis-livan vis-livan of Hurricane, at that place last Saturday. The visit, he says, was an inspiration. Naturally they expected to offer of-fer sympathy to Paul, who has suffered the loss of both legs, below the knees, but he said, "Paul, and the other boys in that ward, just don't give one an op portunity ' to sympathize with them." Some of the boys are already al-ready getting their new limbs, and Paul expects to be getting around before too long. After what he witnessed, he figures if the civilians meet these boys even with half the courage they are taking their problems, they will really get places. IBs Pa A. Hawkins Now SSgt.. Arland L. Hawkins is now a Staff Sergeant, having been advanced ad-vanced from Corporal to that rating recently at Camp Shelby, Miss. He has been squadron ' leader ever since he arrived at Camp Shelby, and reports he now has a squadron of teen age boys, which is more to his liking than the older men of his previous squadron. His wife, Dorothy, is with him at Camp Shelby for a two-weeks' visit, leaving their small son with . his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hawkins in St. George. When she returns, she will resume her class work at Dixie junior college. Pa Pa pa Pvt. N. Bundy Transferred Pvt. Newell Bundy, who has been training at Little Rock, Ark., has been transferred to Camp Swift, Texas. He has -been home recently on furlough, leaving for the new location Oct. 31st. On Oct. 28, his sister, Mrs. Helen Wright of St. George, entertained a large group of his friends at a party in his honor. His home is in Mt. Trumbull. & (a s ac N. Atkin At Luke Field Norman Atkin, who is now an aviation cadet, visited in St. George recently with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hyrum Atkin. He was accompanied by his wife, and they were enroute from Santa Ana, Calif., to Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz., where he will continue with his training in the Army air force. pa pa ps WAC Tillohash Visits Here Miss Lilly Tillohash, who is in i training with the WAC's at Fortj Des Moines, Iowa, was home forj a day last week to visit her par- ents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Tillo-j hash, and other family members, j She is one of the local Indian ! girls who are taking part in the military set-up and says she likes i her work at Fort Des Moines J thus far, even though her assign- j ments leave her no leisure time. I I G. Hansen Writes Recent letters from Gordon Hansen, who is apprentice seaman with the .U S. Marines, tells of the interesting phases of his boot training at the Catalina Island center. He left in early October and says his buddy is PeteMickle-son PeteMickle-son of Middleton, and they are having a great time together. Pa Pa pa Hurricane Boys Home Pvt. G. Taylor and Pfc. Jack Ballard, son of Mrs. Louie Wood, both of Hurricane have been home on furloughs. Pvt. Taylor has returned re-turned to his post at Camp Polk, La., and Pfc. Ballard to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. pa Pa Pa Pfc. D. Covington Improving Pfc. Delbert Covington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lorin Covington, who participated in the invasion of France and was wounded on June 12th has been transferred to another hospital in England where he had shrapnel removed from his neck. He tells his parents par-ents he is doing fine now. Pa Pa Pa Cpl. X.. Jacobson In England Cpl. Lindsay K. Jacobson, son of Mrs. Eula Jacobson of Caliente, Nev., and grandson of Mrs. Caroline Caro-line Jacobson of St. George, is serving with the an air service command in England. Recently he completed the orientation courses which bridge the gap between be-tween training in the states and actual 'combat duty in Europe. His instructions at the English base included lectures given by military veterans, on chemical warfare defense, and pertinent tips on keeping healthy in a combat com-bat zone. He is now ready to take his place with America's soldiers of the air in helping to liberate occupied Europe. |
