Show Highway Meet At Cedar Draws 200 To Hear Road Discussion More than 200 individuals attended at-tended the special highway conference con-ference held in Cedar City at 7:30 p.m. Monday night, states Gordon Mathis, one of the officials present at the session from St. George. Others attending from Washington Washing-ton county included George H. Lytle, chairmain, and Morris Wilson Wil-son and Rex Gardner, members, of the board of county commissioners; commis-sioners; Glenn E. Snow, president of the Dixie junior college; L. J. Wadsworth, Laron S. Andrus and Vivian J. Frei, representing interests in-terests in St. George and vicinity; a large delegation from Enterprise Enter-prise and a representative of the St. George Lions club. Besides the Iron County Commissioners, Com-missioners, and other representative representa-tive officials of that county, the session was honored with the attendance at-tendance of the entire State Road commission, under whose direction the meeting was called. The Chairman of the State Road commission made a complete review re-view of the situation, state those who attended, presenting the present pre-sent situation with respect to the proposed improved highway through from Cedar City to the Nevada state line. He explained that some time ago the civic clubs of Southern Utah left to the decision of the State Road commission, com-mission, the route that should be followed in the expenditure of certain cer-tain $50,000 funds now available for state road improvement, the (Continued on page four) Cedar-Modena Road (Continued rrom first page) question having been as to which route would receive consideration, that is, whether it would be the one through from New Castle to Modena, or the one through from New Castle to Enterprise and on to the Nevada line. Attention was called -also to the fact that the highway is already constructed from Cedar City to New Castle and merely needs improving. The decision has been made, the state chairman advised them. The $50,000 will be spent on the highway high-way from New Castle on to Mo- ' dena. and the highway from New j Castle through Enterprise will !o i made a federal road propect. Figures were also released show- : ing that this routing would also be an asset in the interest of U. S. j highway No. 91. since with the road improved from the Nevada' line to Enterprise, and eventually , through to St,. George, would ; naturally result in increased tour-j ist travel through St. George over 91 to the Parks, as this way would he approximately -10 miles nearer than the present route around through Cedar City. The S50.0O0 now available, which will complete the road to Modena from New Castle, is merely providing pro-viding a secondary route, or farmer far-mer to market highway, and will in no wise detract from the annual tourist traffic through St. George. These explanations were readily accepted by all constituents pro-sent pro-sent and each group came from the meeting feeling satisfied with the results of the discussions. The problem now before the people of this particular section, as those informed view it, is to effectively effec-tively organize towards getting the St. George to Modena route through Enterprise completed. Then with the added lure of Snow's Canyon. SI. George with its historic buildings and culture, and the likewise interesting cast end of the county culminating in .ion Park, will without a doubt draw heavily on the tourist trade over this route. |
