Show Pover Company Tells Of Building Program An Estimated $100,000 Will Be Spent During 1939 Says Keed Gardner An extensive construction program pro-gram costing approximately $100,-000.00 $100,-000.00 has been adopted by the Southern Utah Power company for 1939. according to Reid H. Gardner, general manager of the company. Mr .Gardner stated that, due to the increased useage of electric service in Cedar City. St. George and other parts of the territory served by the company, it has been found nscessary to adopt the largest construction program the company has had since 1931. Included in the company's construction con-struction program is the rebuilding rebuild-ing of transmission lines and the increasing of the size of their copper wires in these lines over a distance of 19 miles between St. George and the company's hydro plant at La Verkin and 11 miles between St. George and the company's hydro plant near Veyo. In addition to the reinforcing of copper in this area, the company is adding larger rles and wider cross arms for an additional 15 miles. Mr. Gardner stated that when employees patrol transmission lines of the company they often find eagles, hawks and owls that have been electrocuted by coming in contact with the high voltage wires. Each such electrocution causes voltage fluctuations and sometimes causes a power failure. By spacing wires further apart it will be less possible for birds to contact two wires when taking (Continued on page ten) IS. U. Power Company (Continued from first page) off from a pole crossarm, as is now the case. The larger wires will also help make the company's plants more stable and improve voltage regulation, regu-lation, he stated. More than 20 tons of copper wire will be added this year to transmission lines and approximately five tons to distribution lines. Plans have also been made for the purchase of new generators and water wheels and for a larger penstock at the company's hydro plants near Veyo in order to furnish fur-nish more power and to increase the stability and dependability of the company's service. Other equipment to be purchased includes in-cludes voltage regulators, oil circuit cir-cuit breakers, governors and relays, re-lays, all designed to improve service. ser-vice. While stop-watch records kept in the St. George office of the company show that service is available for use 99 per cent of the time, the company feels that an improvement can be made in the quality of service by purchase of the new equipment that is contemplated. Mr. Gardner stated that all of the work contemplated will be done by the company's own employees em-ployees with the help of persons hired locally, in order that as much benefit as possible from the construction program , will be felt in the local communities. Work has now started near Leeds on the line rebuilding program. pro-gram. Some of the other equipment equip-ment has been ordered and all work will be completed this year. |
