Also eradication of volunteer beets from seed fields of previous seed crops. All companies expressed themselves in not being interested in beet seed where growers do not properly take care of their volunteer volun-teer beets and allowing them to grow and pollinate with the present crop, or where the old beet field is not being plowed (Continued on page ten) Beet Seed Convention (Continued from first page) up immediately after the seed crop has been harvested. Mr. Jensen Jen-sen reports at Oakland, Calif, there are being built two new beet seed harvesting machines. These machines are built to cut a width of seven feet, conveys the seed to a win row and retains all loose seed shelled off in cutting and conveyed to a bag by means of a conveyor. When completed these new machines are being delivered to the Phoenix-Arizona beet seed district. Present indications are that the acreage for beet seed growing to be planted this fall will be greatly reduced in the California area, due to various reasons. While at San Francisco Mr. Jensen visited the San Francisco exposition, which opened Saturday, Satur-day, Feb. 18. He also visited with his son, Gilman, who is with the Matison Navigation company and with his son, Whitney, who is there attending school. |
