Show Need for St. George-Enterprise George-Enterprise Road Stressed by Swapp Attention Directed to Road Completed Between Cedar And Nevada Line; Action Asked on Enterprise Road Uy BENJAMIN SWAPP For a number of years the question of a highway from St. George to Enterprise and Mondena has been in the minds of our county commissioners and progressive prog-ressive business men of the county, as well as other roads leading into Utah's scenic wonderland. won-derland. All efforts along some lines have been blocked by other interests. A lot of money and energy has been sacrificed to influence the Governor of our state and the state road commission to look with favor upon the construction of a safe road from St. George to Enterprise. This route has been looked upon with disfavor by all those responsible for our road systems. It has always been the policy of road construction to place roads along the routes that will seive the rural population of the state or the people whose prcpeiy furnish the finance for government. In some states hundreds hun-dreds of thousands cf dollars have been expended to ctnnect these rural communities with the best possible road. Yet at the present pres-ent time the state road commission com-mission is neglecting a responsibility responsi-bility to its citizens and favoring favor-ing or upholding a selfish motive or interest of some group to the detriment of others. At the present, time a standard highway has been completed from Cedar City west to just east and north of New Castle and the present pres-ent plans or setup is to run direct; from there west to the point of ridge thence bearing southly to a point one and one-half miles south of Modena, thus leaving New Castle south of this route and Modena north of it not tapping tap-ping a Comihiihity or ranch between be-tween Cedar City arid the Nevada state line. This shows the majority ma-jority of the taxpayers of the county, the selfish greed or motive back of the move. Instead this road could come thru New Castle, Enterprise then to Modena with perhaps three miles additional road and serve three communities with a mail route and connecting Enterprise with a road. But as we a.re now, we have nothing better than a yW trail. As soon as you get east of New Castle one mile you have standard stand-ard road to Cedar City or north to the Cedar-Modena road you have good road to Modena. This road could run thru Enterprise, thence west to Crestline and con-( con-( Continued on page 4) ENTERPRISE ROAD (Continued from first page) nect with the Nevada end there. This would shorten the present proposed route. The selfish motive back of this route is that if a better road is developed between Enterprise and 91 at St. George, Cedar City will not fatten from this Nevada travel. I think the time has come when peope must be heard. The higher-ups do not own the state or the state highways but are only servants of the people whose sole purpose is to serve those people who are responsible Zor their Jobs. |
