Show State May Aid In Curb To Curb Paving Of Highway Change Of Policy By 1". S. Bureau Of Public Roads Makes It Possible For State Aid That there is a possibility of securing state aid in the paving of highway 91 from curb to curb in the business district, is seen in a letter written by Ezra C. Wnowl-ton. Wnowl-ton. cheif engineer of the state road commission, to Attorney Howard Cannon. Mr. Cannon wrote the state road commission relative to this problem recently and in answer to the letter Mr. Knowlton explained what could be done in this matter. "Until very recently," Mr. Knowlton wrote, "it has been the poilcy of this department that state funds and federal funds within its charge were to be limited limit-ed to a 2-lane width along the main street of cities through which the state highway passes. However, How-ever, during the past few months, with the approval of the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads, this policy has been modified to permit, per-mit, under certain circumstances the use of these funds for the widening of main street sections. Under this policy, such work was completed in Panguitch during the past year. "Of course projects of this nature na-ture are wholly dependent upon the availability of funds, and definite assurance cannot be given that such a project can be undertaken under-taken in St. George until future programs are prepared. "Should the city officials of St. George wish to have such a project pro-ject considered, it would be very (Continued on page eight) Highway Paving I (Continued from first page) proper for them to make an ap-lication, ap-lication, suggesting the extent of the project desired. With the information in-formation at hand, the State Road commission will give consideration to such an application if it is found that federal funds are available avail-able for such a purpose." In commenting on this letter, Mr. Cannon suggests that it might be a good idea for all local civic and club organizations to get be hind this move and send in resolu-tions resolu-tions asking that it be done and showing the need for the project. ( Mr. Cannon reports that he approached ap-proached Mayor Albert E. Miller Mil-ler regarding the project and the presenting of it as required by the road commission and Mayor Miller assured him that the city council would be glad to back the move. "It looks like St. George can get the street paved if they go after it. We should get every organization or-ganization back of the move and put It over", said Mr. Cannon. |
