Show SELECTING TURKEY ! BREEDING STOCK Are you going to raise turkeys in 1930? If so, this is the time of year to select your poults that are going to make up the 1930 breeding stock. You will find on inspecting your flock now that some of the birds have been, and are growing much faster than others. These are early maturing birds and the very ones we want for breeders. Early maturity is an inherited inherit-ed characteristic and is highly desirable desira-ble and a necessity in the turkey flock. Our season from hatching to Thanksgiving is short and for that season we must have quick-growing, good doing, early maturing turkeys. The shorter the period needed to grow a good turkey, the less feed will be consumed in maintenance. It is also essential that the early maturing turkeys tur-keys selected for breeders have a broad deep body, covered with an even layer of thick flesh. The big raw-boned turkey tur-key never develops into a good looking carcass. It is impossible to finish or fatten a turkey until it has reached maturity; matur-ity; therefore, select the early maturing matur-ing birds for your breeders. At this time mark about twice as many birds as you will want in your 1930 flock. Watch them carefully from now on and pick out the best half of them before the Thanksgiving slaughter. Never sell these quick maturing poults and keep the tail-enders for your breeders. a Color should be taken into consideration, consid-eration, but where you are not selling sell-ing breeding stock it is a minor item. That thick covering of light-colored flesh and fat is the color the market wants. Select for vim, vigor, vitality, which items go to make up early maturity ma-turity and let color of the feathers take care of itself. (Western Farm Life.
