Show WINTER GRIPS SOUTH OWH Ten Inches of Snow with Water Content of 1.77 Inches Recorded In St. Georse During January The hand of winter settled over southern Utah with the beginning be-ginning of 1033, and during the month of January, 10 inches of snow was recorded in St. George, the "land of sunshine" of the istate. The total snowfall for the month had a moisture content con-tent of 1.77 inches, which is unprecedented un-precedented for the first month of the year in this district. During the past week, eight inches of snow, with a water content of .52 of an inch, has fallen. Temiperatures, in spite of the storm, have remained moderate, mod-erate, averaging between 35 and 50 during the day, and from 17 to 30 at night. Sixteen degrees above zero has been the lowest registered since of the beginning of 1933. Other parts of Washington county have been visited with heavy storms. In the Enterprise section there is now, according to the estimate of B. C. Farnsworth, Farns-worth, approximately 23 inches of snow on the level. Only two inches of this, however, has fallen fal-len during the past week, but all has come since Christmas. In the hills surrounding Enterprise, there is believed to be between three and four feet, indicating that prospects for plenty of irrigation ir-rigation water this year are excellent. ex-cellent. The weather there has not been cold enough to crust the snow, and there is nothing official offi-cial tO sic-" the amounjj of water wa-ter in the Enterprise. ?Mrvolrs. However, the snow seems to be a fairly positive indication that there is little to worry about in this regard. Monday a heavy storm passed pass-ed over Diamond valley and Cane Springs, closing the St. George-Enterprise highway for a few days. The Enterprise-Modena route was also blocked by storm and the only outlet for that community was over the desert to Cedar City. The eastern part of Washington Washing-ton county has, been visited with practically the same class of storms that have struck St. George, with temperatures recorded re-corded slightly lower. At the summit of Beaver Dam mountains on highway 91, cars were stalled for several hours lat week awaiting clearing of the road by a plow. It is estimated esti-mated there are about two feet of snow on the level there now, but the highway is open and in good condition. |
