SUPPORT TO BE SOUGHT FOR 01 PARK Present Session of Legislature Legisla-ture Will Ask Congress to Make Wayne Wonderland Wonder-land National Monument The Wayne Wonderland will be made into a national monument monu-ment if a bill to be presented in the state legislature within a short time, by Representative E. P. Pectol, is passed. It is the plan of the legislator from Wayne county to introduce a memorial to congress to have the great natural wonder taken under the wing of the federal government. Recognition of the Wayne Wonderland by adding it to the string of official monuments is the first step to be taken before the scenic area later is made into a national park. With the official recognition by congress, the area will later become more readily accessible by the construction of new highways, high-ways, just as other national monuments mon-uments and parks in the west have been made easier of access. Representative Pectol also has a bill for introduction which provides pro-vides for the improvement of the present road from Hanksville to Greenriver, about 60 miles to the north. This highway would be of vast benefit to Emery and Wayne counties, not alone for pleasure cars, but for trucking of freight from the railroad at Greenriver. The road at present is maintained main-tained by the to counties, which recently spent about $3000 improving it for three-fourths, of the distance. The greatest difficulty dif-ficulty encountered in the stretch of highway is across the San Rafael Ra-fael swell. rfITe1Te p resen ta ilVePec io i !tT immediately concerned with the road northward from Hanksville. to Greenriver, he also has in mind the construction of a highway from the Wayne Wonderland Won-derland eastward to the Natural Nat-ural bridges in San Juan county coun-ty and to connect with the scenic scen-ic highway reaching still farther far-ther to the east into the Mesa Verde National park. This proposed highway would also extend westward to the southern Utah parks, making an all-weather highway across the southern part of the state. Zeke Johnson, custodian of the Natural Bridges national monument, conferred with Representative Rep-resentative rcctol on this project, proj-ect, which will be surveyed during dur-ing the early spring by tho United States bureau of public roads. It is proposed to extend the present road from Itlanding to the bridges, down White canyon can-yon to the Colorado river at the Dandy crossing: The plan eventually even-tually contemplates the erection of a bridge across the Colorado river at this point, but until the money shall be available for this, a ferry no doubt will bo used. The construction of a highway high-way from Dandy crossing up to Hanksville would be the final unit in this system, after crossing cross-ing the Colorado westward. Continuing this system of highways on westward, the motorist mo-torist would be brought out to the present federal aid road south of Itichrield. The federal bureau of roads believes In this project, since It would afford a new east-west route and link the cliff dwellings dwell-ings of southwestern Colorado with the Natural Bridges, Arch canyon, the Wayne Wonderlands and the southern Utah parks. |
