Show PROPOSED ROAD WOULD OPEN UP NORTH STRIP Highway Connecting With Kingman King-man Would Make St. George Hub of South Utah Travel If efforts are put forth at this time, appropriations can be secured se-cured from the Arizona legislature at this session to open up a road from Kingman to St. George, according accord-ing to those who are interested in the opening up of the strip ocuntry, and who are working on the matter. mat-ter. It will be remembered that in 1920 Arizona appropriated $10,000 for preliminary pre-liminary surveys, which were made, and $80,000 for a bridge across the Colorado at Peach Spring canyon. But due to the fact that the north peer of the proposed bridge and a short portion of the road would be on Indian reservation land, the work was held up and the money reverted back to the state. An effort is being be-ing made to again secure this money for the purpose for which it was intended. A road south to Kingman and on to Phoenix would be of untold value to southern Utah. It would be the means of making St. George the hub of tourist travel in southern Utah. It would give the vast Arizona strip country an outlet, bring a large amount of business to St. George, and put us in close touch with Arizona. Kingman, which lies little more than 150 miles to the south, is now reached reach-ed only by a trip of over 350 miles by way of Las Vegas and Needles, Calif. It is thought by those working on the proposition that Clark county will cooperate in the securing of the funds for the road which would tap the Grand Canyon country by way of I St. Thomas and the Grand Wash. Kingman is vitally interested in the building of the road, for in addition to giving them an oulet to southern Utah, it would force the state to connect on south to Phoenix, tapping tap-ping another trans-continental highway. |
