Show PICKING, PACKING DEMONSTRATED Prof. F. ML Coe, horticulturist, of the agricultural college, visited Washington county orchards and packing houses this week, hold'ng peach packing demonstrations at Hurricane and Toquerville and assisting as-sisting growers at Bloomington and Santa Clara with harvesting and packing problems. He was assisted by County Agent Walter F. Smith and Manager Orval Hafen of the produce association. Prof. Coe commended Dixie growers grow-ers on the results secured through their soil management and pruning programs. Increased growth through cultivation of young trees was noted in many orchards, while many growers grow-ers are using the modified leader system of training to good advantage. advan-tage. Bearing trees long pruned had the advantage in size of crop, color of fruit and shape of trees, the fruit spreading the trees and bending bend-ing the branches downward. The need for experimental work I in testing new varieties and differ ent systems of soil management was discussed. The meetings at Hurricane Hur-ricane and Toquerville voted unanimously unani-mously to appoint committeemen to secure a horticultural experimental farm for Dixie. John Sanders of Hurricane and Bishop W. H. men for their respective communities. communi-ties. Problems and opportunities of the cooperative marketing organization were discussed by Prof. Coe, pointing out that success must be based on a superior product, obtained by paying a premium for the better grades and sizes of fruit. |
