Fry's bill calling for monthly newspaper publication of the expenditures of city, school and county tax-expend-Ing bodies triumphed in Utah's lower house Friday by a vote of 36 to 15. Passage of the bill came after a hi:,ted debate in which an amendment amend-ment providing that publication be quarterly had failed by a close vote. In support of the measure, Repre-sen'ative Repre-sen'ative V. D. Hammond pointed to recent events in Salt Lake as indicative in-dicative of the need of letting the public know what is being done with its money. That, he said, is a primary pri-mary purpose of the bill. The recent thefts of public funds in Salt Lake also was cited during the debate. Several representatives told of letters let-ters being received from their constituents con-stituents asking them to vote in opposition op-position to the Fry bill. In every case, they said, the protestants were public pub-lic officials. Mr. Fry produced nu- ?rou? petitions in favor of his bill Ven by taxpaying citizens. i ' |
