Show INFORMATION OF INTEREST by Walter BmJth, County Agent FoihI Preservation The first consideration in our summer program pro-gram should be preparing an adequate ad-equate food supply for the family. The home garden is, of course, the most essential part of the farm and produces In percentage more than any other part of the farm. On account of our water shortage and due to the fact that we expect storms later on, it will be necessary that we emphasize empha-size fall gardens. Every man must prepare for his own. It Is being proposed - that canning centers be set up whereby individuals indi-viduals may receive help in both supplies and equipment in canning can-ning their winter supply of food. There will be demonstration driers on exhibit and interesting parties may make their own driers for drying various kinds of fruits and vegetables. Feed and Livestock The hay situation throughout Utah and Washington county is extremely bad. Washington county will have less than one-fourth the normal hay crop if the drouth continues. This means that many cattle will go un-fed or under fed and many of them will likely starve to death. In meeting this emergency the county committee proposes the following: 1. Every family should slaughter slaugh-ter one or two head of cattle and can the meat. This meat can be chilled in ice boxes before be-fore canning. If you wait until November when the nights are cool to do this work these animals ani-mals will have eaten part of the feed that should be preserved for the rest of the herd. 2. Cane and com -should be planted for silage feeds. These crops take much less water than alfalfa and will produce from 12 to 20 tons per acre as compared com-pared with alfalfa producing two or three tons per acre. Remember Remem-ber that silage, If fed with hay, 1s worth the 6ame, pound per pound. The price of alfalfa hay will go up because of feed shortage, and the value of most cattle wIH not Justify spending money to buy feed. There will also be canning meat in a wholesale the county where people can get equipement and supervision In canning meeat in a wholesale way. Water Conservation The plan this season must be to make our limited supply of water go just as far as it will 1. Annual crops that require limited amount of water should be planted to supplement alfalfa, c. g. cane, corn and cow peas. 2. Irrigation ditches should be cleaned and lined so as to preserve pre-serve the water. 3. Watering should be closely supervised so that none of It runs to waste nor stays on any one run longer than necessary. 4. Streams should be consolidated. consolida-ted. Better service can be made of water by running it quickly over the land and covering the entire field than by letting It run for hours in one turn. 6. Weeds, willows, and waste materials evaporate water as much as crops do. General cleanup clean-up in fields and gardens should be practiced. Fruit Situation The fruit situation sit-uation in Dixie is very favorable In most sections. Hurricane's peach crop is good and the water shortage will not be a problem , before this crop of fruit is oveT. Some of the northern Utah counties coun-ties report a short fruit crop. Utah county and Box Elder county coun-ty forecast a fruit crop failure if the drouth continues. Dixie fruit should, therefore bring a fine price. Every peach should be sold, canned, pr dried and no one in Dixie should be Bhort of fruit this year. Innect Control Five tons of grasshopper bait is being distributed distri-buted in grasshopper infested areas in the county. If you are having an out break of these insects get In touch with the county agent. Orchadists are being given assistance on determining the proper time to spray apples and pears for coddling moth control. The first cover spray should have been put on, according to the report, about May 1. The second cover spray should go on about June 16. A definite date will be determined hy cooperators who are timing the insects with "hootch pots." Many growers are paying no attention to this information, infor-mation, but are simply guessing as to the best time of application. |
