Show NEW ROUTE TO GRAND CAXYOX RECEIVES OKEH Ogdcn, August 2 6. B. J. Finch, district engineer for the U. S. bureau of public roads, returned Tuesday night from an inspection of roads in southern Utah and in Zion National park. He reports that road conditions condi-tions between Ogden and the entrance en-trance to the park there now exists only about five miles of detours in a distance of 370 miles. A large part of the remaining distance has been improved by -the state and federal government, and the unimproved roads are in good condition as regards re-gards maintenance. The drive between be-tween Ogden and Zion National park can now be made very comfortably in about 15 hours. While in Zion park, Mr. Finch investigated in-vestigated the proposed route from the park eastward toward Mount Carmel. This route would form the main connecting road between Washington Wash-ington and Kane county points, and would make it possible to travel direct dir-ect from Zion National park to the Grand. Canyon without going over the long route which now exists in northern Arizona. A feasible route was found, and it is expected that the survey will start within a few days. Mr. Finch was assisted in this investigation in-vestigation by R. R. Mitchell, associate associ-ate highway engineer of the bureau of public roads, and Supt. R. T. Evans of Zion National park. The route will open up some of the most wonderful scenery in southern south-ern Utah, and the road itself when constructed, will be one of the most remarkable pieces of construction which has ever been attempted in road building. |
