Show TUBER TTPS (By L. L. PORTER) Select an alfalfa field, with loamy soil, sloping to the north is preferable. pref-erable. Operations Crown alfalfa, mulch well, plow 8 to 9 inches deep, mulch well again, furrow out and irrigate, thoroughly soaking, mulch again before planting, plant 3 to 4 inches in-ches deep, use early varieties, Irish cobler, Bliss Triumph, and Early Ohio are best. When plants begin to appear, hill up with cultivator and cover about two inches deep. When potatoes come through, hill up again about two inches deep. This gives seven to eight inches of mulched soil over the tubers. Now cultivate about every week until blossoming time and do not irrigate irri-gate until blossoms appear. Then water well before sunrise and cultivate cul-tivate twice after watering. . Time of planting, when apples bloom, or about the last of March in Dixie. Time of digging, about 90 days after planting. This test was made in St. George in 1929. One hundred seventy square feet of ground planted on April 23 to Irish cobler potatoes cared for as per above instructions instruc-tions yielded 80 pounds of marketable market-able potatoes, which at 7 cents per pound meant $5.60. Figure out what an acre would yield in pounds and dollars. Remember, a big crop of corn cr citron or both can be raised rais-ed on the same acre after the potatoes po-tatoes are harvested. |
