Show WOODWARD SCHOOL We are vory happy in the College Third Grade to have most of our class back to school. We do hope that our boys and girls who are still ill can soon return to us. Miss Murdock, one of our training teachers, is teaching teach-ing art in our room and wo are enjoying It so much. We are now painting and cutting out our March border. At the play-ground last week, washer pitching was a thrill. The fine part was that two fourth grade boys, Sam Lovelady and ElMyrrh L. Cox, were the winners. win-ners. They did not win by luck but by skill. This week basketball basket-ball is back in full force. During the past month the two sixth grades have been studying the Flag code. This has been sponsored by the American Legion Le-gion Auxiliary, LesteT Keate Post No. 90. Many fine papers have been handed in, first place was given to Glenna Webb and second se-cond place to Mona Fawcett Following is the essay handed in by Glenna Webb. THsplaying the Flag The flag of the United States was made at the home of Betsy Ross. George Washington told her to make it. He told her to make it with thirteen stripes to represent the thirteen colonies and thirteen stars to represent the thirteen states at that time. There are forty-eight stars now to represent the forty-eight states. stat-es. Each color in the flag means a certain thing. Red means bravery, white means purity and blue means loyalty. We should salute the flag every day. In schools they practice this and even adults do it. This is the pledge we should say when sal uting: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible in-divisible with liberty and justice for all." Before the pledge we should put our right hand over our heart and repeat it. Then at the words "to the flag," the right hand is extended upward towards the flag and this position held until the end, when the hand after the words "justice for all" drops to the side. The flag should be displayed from sunrise unil sunset. It should go on briskly and go down slowly. The flag should be displayed on National holidays holi-days like George Washington's birthday. Lincoln's birthday and Independence Day. 1 Ther flag should be flying on the flag pole every day of the year because it is our emblem. When marching with another flag, our flag of United States should be carried on the right of other flags. We should not be disloyal to the flag bv letting it drag on the ground, by cutting cut-ting it into pieces or in anyway showing disrespect. When the flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display it should not be cast aside but Bhould be. burned or completely destroyed in some way that is in harmony and shows the reverence and the respect re-spect we owe to the emblem representing re-presenting bur country. Our flag of the United States now represents over one hundred million people of our independent indepen-dent country, the United States. |
