Show NEW ROAD PROJECT STUDIED BY FOREST RANGER BEN SWAPP Benjamin Swapp, Forest Rang e r, has given considerable thought and study to the project of building a road from Grass Valley to Whipple, on top of the mountain. It is realized that at present our timber resources on the Pino Valleys are to a great extent in-accessable, in-accessable, as all accessable timber tim-ber has been removed, leaving only that portion that lies on the higher elevations, with no possible chance at presont for the removal. Of the 55,607.000 feet of timber tim-ber on the Dixie div'.siP'i the greater portion of this lies with-n with-n the vicinity of this road, and in addition there are thousands of cords of dry wood that can be removed, to say nothing of the poles. House Logs, and fencing material that would bo sold. With the constriction of this road we would not only open up onr present timber resources for market mar-ket but would do an improve ment that would have a far reaching effect upon the increased increas-ed improvements to farmers and ranchers by providing an outlet that will permit them to get the material to build with. From the hi corner common to sections 29 and 32, township 38 south, range 14 west to the Gardner Sawmill is 16500 feot and a difference in elevation of 830 feet, so that the grade would be less than 5 per cent, while in the main the grade is less, but it does not provide for break.-in break.-in grade that occur at intervals from the sawmill to the head or where the canyon opens out the grade is more severe with : raise of 500 feet in little over s mile. The climb from this point to the head will also vary to some extent as there are two sections where the grade will be severe but in no case objectionable, and which can in most cases be smoothed out to some extent. The total distance of the project pro-ject would be approximately 11 miles from its intersection with the Pine Valley-Pinto road at the north end of Grass Valley. The construction of this road would not only furnish an outlet for our timber but would provide pro-vide other advantages such as hunting and recreation. Since this road would be a revenue producing enterprise and would furnish timber and material for buildings, and improvement im-provement for years to come Mr. Swapp recommends that this road be constructed in connection connec-tion with E. C. W. work, and incorporated in out work plan for the coming year. |
