Show CARE OF EYES IS HEALTH FACTOR The most widespread of all eye troubles is eye strain, according to Dr. Hugh Burgess, formerly of Spokane, Wash., who has recently established offices and residence in St. George. Eye strain and its effects ef-fects cause more pain and disability disa-bility thin all the other eye troubles trou-bles combined. It is responsible for more headaches than all other causes. Our most conservative scientists sci-entists of today agree that seven out of ten headaches come from the eyes. Eye strain is caused by excessive efforts to use imperfect eyes without correcting glasses or with glasses improperly prescribed and fitted. However, a . perfect eye may be strained by improper use or excessive use without proper periods of rest or by improper lighting. Of the 4981 children examinee! last fall in southern Utah, 11.1 . per cent were so defective that they needed glasses or treatment. This percentage is very low compared com-pared to statistics all over the United States and covers only those in decided need of attention. The percentage for each community com-munity in Washington county is ss follows: St. George, 14.7; Santa San-ta Clara, 6.8; Gunlock, 11.1; Veyo, 11.7; Washington, 12.5;. Leeds, 17.8; Toquerville, 11.6; LaVerkin, 12.4; Hurricane, 11.2; Rockville, 8.6; Epringdale, 17.1. The importance of correcting the defects of school children cannot be over-estimated. It is an established estab-lished faot that eighty-five to ninety nine-ty per cent of all our knowledge is acquired through the eyes. A child with defective vision is handicapped han-dicapped in his studies and many failures can be directly traced to this cause. In many cases those corrected raised their grades from below average to superior rating when they were considered below normal mentally. Several malnourished mal-nourished children gained their normal weight after a proper correction. |
