Show would be appreciated. If you have a change of pace pitch Marion Mar-ion Cowdell, the left hander could use one. The BDAA baseball base-ball team could use any number of good ball players. Coach All-sop All-sop would be pleased to have you drop some magic toy that would make about three of his boys high scorers. Some of the bowlers could use a good controlled con-trolled hook if you have any. For the rest of us Santa, if you can find a way to stop all. the strife and turmoil in the world and bring the fathers, husbands and sons home to their loved ones. This would be the greatest of all Christmases. And for me Santa just put a card in everyone's stocking saying Merry Xmas from Al. . Sports Here and There byAlAblett They finally. gave old Archie Moore his chance and he gave Joey Maxim a going over to win the light heavyweight championship champion-ship of the world. Archie who claims to 30 years, has been a-round a-round a long time. He is the "Satchel Page" of boxing. For the past 5 or 6 years he has beat every light heavy he could get in the ring with him, but he could not get that shot at the championship and the big money. mon-ey. Archie has just made a good living. His pay off for this fight wasn t much more than it took for training expenses. He says he will be a fighting champion and well he might be, because he hasn't got too many years left at 36 now. Only one man older ever ev-er won the championship that was Bob Fitzsimmons. Ruby Robert Ro-bert was 41. TV is a great thing and to those of us who live away from the great centers of population it is the only means we have of seeing see-ing these great sporting events. But if something isn't done in regards to the small boxing clubs wrestling clubs and minor league baseball, TV will be the monster with the firey breath that will destroy the things that have made it great I could sight you case after case of cities in the east that used to be good baseball towns that today are without a team in organized ball, because the fans would rather stay home and watch a big league game any time than go out to the park and pay to see minor league ball. Now the same holds true of boxing box-ing and wrestling. I have had any number of fans tell me, "why should I go to the fairground in bad weather to see a couple of locals fight when I can sit home in comfort and twice a week see the best". But the time will come when what they see on TV will be no better than the locals they refused to go out and see, because be-cause where will the future greats come from If there is no place left for them to get their start. Yet the big shots of these sports are so money hungry that they can't see what is happening happen-ing or they don't care. Football and basketball are not in any immediate danger because school spirit will keep them going. But for the rest of the sports picture, the handwriting is on the wall. Coach Allsop is taking this time to perfect his basketball team. They have been hard at practice but as yet the center rst position is stil) wide open, don t think we will be able to pick the starting lineup until they take the floor for the opening open-ing conference game. At this time I always send my letter to Santa Claus, so here goes Dear Santa: If you have any spare boys a-round a-round six foot and 200 pounds, Coach Santistevan can use them on his next year's football team, and a couple of hard hitting outfielders out-fielders for his baseball team . |
