Show Manila student awarded space scholarship A Manila student interested in the growth rate of different plants as they orbit the earth has been awarded a full-tuition full-tuition Life Science Department Space Scholarship for the 1982-83 school at Southern Utah State College. Paul D. Lamb, son of Duane and WaNeta Lamb, Manila, is one of the two SUSC freshmen selected to receive space scholarships. They are the first participants in the "Getaway Special," a project designed to enable SUSC students to research and develop experiments ex-periments for future flights of the United State Space Shuttle. Carbon High School graduate John Jay Whipple is the recipient of the second se-cond scholarship which has been awarded by the SUSC Physical Science Department. SUSC's "Getaway Special" has been made possible by R. Gilbert Moore, special projects manager for Thiokol Corporation's Space Booster program. Moore has purchased excess space on upcoming shuttle flights which he has donated to SUSC. "Lamb and Whipple will visit Utah State University for a few days fall quarter to look over the space research program established there," said Russell D. Anderson, chairman of the SUSC Department of Life Sciences. "When they return to SUSC, they'll begin to research and develop their own experiments." SUSC faculty members will serve as advisors for the student space projects. Experiments completed by SU6C students could be aboard space shuttle i flights as early as 1984, Dr. Anderson said. Lamb plans to attend SUSC to purse a major in aerospace engineering with a minor in botany. An avid gardener, he has built his own greenhouse and finds the study of physics fascinating. He plans to combine these interests in a project geared toward eventual food production in space. The SUSC scholarship winner attended attend-ed Manila High School through his junior year then transferred to Logan High School where he graduated on May 28. Lamb's high school honors include in-clude recognition as the outstanding student in basketball, science and biology at Manila High School and as the first place winner, physical science division, at a regional science fair. He participated in the Knowledge Bowl for two years and received the "I Dare You Award" and a summer camp scholarship. |
