Show 7fh District bench nod to Davidson Deputy Uintah County Attorney Richard Davidson was appointed by Gov. Scott M. Matheson Monday to fill a new judge's seat for the 7th Judicial District. The only question remaining is, when will Davidson start to perform his new job? Matheson's squabble with state legislators over the lawmakers' input into judicial selections has advanced to the district court level, in the form of a request by the governor that his power to make the appointments be left intact. The matter is expected to go to the Utah Supreme Court. Davidson, along with Vernal attorney John R. Anderson and Duchesne County Coun-ty Attorney Dennis Draney, was nominated for the governor's consideration con-sideration by a seven-member committee. commit-tee. Davidson assuming his role on the bench will coincide with Uintah, Duchesne and Daggett counties becoming becom-ing part of the 7th District, joining Carbon, Car-bon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties. coun-ties. The Uintah Basin counties currently current-ly belong to the 4th District, based in Provo. Davidson had filed as a candidate for Uintah County Attorney in November's election, along with Vernal attorney Alvin Nash. County Attorney Clark B. Allred said Tuesday he wasn't sure who would replace Davidson, who has been handling handl-ing all of the county's criminal matters. The county commission will be consulted con-sulted about a replacement, he said. ' . ' ''""' 1 ' i ; - 1 v v I i ' ... . V Richard Davidson Area legal officials agree the creation of a new judgeship means essentially that the Uintah Basin will have its own district judge, though Davidson will probably spend his initial months on the bench in other parts of the district until most of his caseload from Uintah County Coun-ty clears the court system. The legislature in its 1982 regular session ses-sion voted to override Matheson's veto of a bill that would have given the state senate advise and consent power over judicial appointments. Davidson said he was interviewed Monday afternoon by Matheson and was notified of the decision at about 5:30 by the governor's aide, Jolene Nor-ris. |
