Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Pony League team downs Price Baseball all-star tournaments were held in Vernal in July and August and the city of Vernal has been the location for many all-star meets. One such meet was held in Vernal in 1966. The story about the tournament follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on August 11, 1966. PONY LEAGUE TOURNEY ENDS. BOUNTIFUL WINS Four days of tournament baseball came to close Saturday night when Bountiful captured a pair of tightly contested games from the previously undefeated Provo team, 10-7 and 6-5. Both games went into extra innings before they were decided. Vernal was handed a bitter defeat in the early stages of the tourney, getting dumped first by Carbon, 5-3 and then being eliminated from play by the Eldredge Park, Idaho team, 8-1. A home-run with two men out and two strikes on the batter by the Bountiful team in the final inning brought fans whooping to their feet and sent the Bountiful nine into a second match with Provo to break a tie for championship honors. Bountiful grimly hung on through the second game and capitalized on a Provo error in another extra inning to carry away top score and the title, 6-5." A Little League Tournament took place in Roosevelt in 1965 during the annual UBIC celebration. The story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Aug. 12, 1965. "Price American and Wasatch National won berths in the second level play during the Little League plavoffs at Roosevelt last week. Price American won over the Vernal All-Stars Thursday 6-1. The only score for Vernal was made on a homer by Tony Chew. In other games Thursday Wasatch American over Park City 16-5 and Wasatch National over Duchesne 9-0. In the Duchesne-Wasatch Duchesne-Wasatch game the Wasatch pitcher, Randy Lundin of Midway, hurled a perfect game. There were no run, no hits. Second day play saw Park City win over Duchesne 8-7; Wasatch American lose to Wasatch National 5-3 and Price American keep Roosevelt scoreless with a 4-0 tally. This was District 6 playoffs of the Western Boys Baseball Leagues." Members of the 1965 Vernal Little League All-Stars were Ron Edrington, coach; Lyle Colerick, manager; Randy Reynolds, Jim Johnson, Lowell Aycock, Jim Boren, Jeff Preston, Mark Colerick, Donnie Curtis, Craig Monsen, Tony Chew, Mike Hatch, Mark Enyeart, Kenny Edrington, Jim Burton, Tim Hanberg, Bill Reynolds and Keith Foley. The 1965 Vernal Pony League All-Stars, All-Stars, which also contained one Roosevelt player, almost advanced to the World Series. A baseball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on August 5. 1965. PONY LEAGUE TEAM PLAYS IN PRICE TILT Vernal Pony League All-Stars Wednesday night played Price in an away tilt. If they were successful they will play in Price again Saturday for the regional championship. Vernal took the lead in the Area 4 baseball tournament tour-nament held at the local ball park Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. Thursday Vernal beat East Carbon 16-1, but Friday lost to Price 9 to 2. Saturday Vernal again played Price and this time beat them 9-7. The same day they played Price again in a doubleheader and won the championship cham-pionship 5-4. In the Saturday championship playoff Joe Murray pitched for Vernal during the whole game. Greg Hatch hit a home run and also a double and Johnny Boren caught a fly which, if dropped, would have tied the game since runners were on base. One mishap occurred Friday night when a Reaber boy of Price had his arm broken with a pitched ball. In other games Thursday Price beat Cortez 8-7 and Friday Cortez beat East carbon 18-2 18-2 in a playoff" Another baseball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on AUg. 12, liK5. After a winning streak at the four-state four-state playoffs in Price last weekend, Vernal Pony League All-Stars were just three games away from the World Series in California. Wednesday of last week Vernal dumped Price with a 6-1 victory. Thursday the local team played Val Verda of Bountiful and won by 7-3. Friday the Vernal boys played Tooele and won again, this time by a scanty 6-5 and then grabbed the championship Saturday by beating Price by a wide margin of 14-3. Highlighting the hitting was Mike Colerick who batted three home runs, the last one with the bases loaded. About 200 people from Vernal were on hand to support the undefeated local team, more than the spectators from Price itself. Winning these rounds will secure a ' berth in the World Series in California. Utah is one of only four states still in the running. PONY LEAGUE TEAM FINALLY LOSES After a long winning streak that took Vernal Pony League All-Stars to within three jumps of national honors, the local team toppled to two California teams last week in Springville. In the first game Wednesday of last week Vernal was edged out by only one run as the team lost 9-8. They were ahead at the bottom of the 7th inning but their opponents hit a home run to tie and then chalked up one more run. Thursday night the decision was much more emphatic when Vernal was overcome by the score of 14-1.
