The best remedy is to get the most from your air conditioning unit, and that means treating it properly. To start, help your air conditioner out. Close drapes and shades against direct sunlight. That alone can cut indoor heat gain by 50. The addition ad-dition of a ventilating fan in the attic (where temperatures can soar to over 140") eliminates trapped heat and lowers the cooling requirement require-ment of your air conditioner . . . Place exhaust fans in the bathroom and the kitchen to remove heat and moisture . . . Vent the clothes dryer outdoors . . . Leave storm windows and doors in place for summer. They'll prevent heat gain just as they preserve heat loss in the winter. Here are other ways you can reduce your air conditioning expense: Place the unit in a central location in the north (shady) side of the house. For best performance, make sure your unit is level. Check and clean your air conditioner each season, replace and clean filters often. Be sure that air conditioner hose connec- I tors are tight. Vibrations loosen them. Set the air conditioner at 78 or higher. A lower setting won't cool any faster. Each degree de-gree downward costs 5 more in operating costs. Turn off the unit if you are going to be out of the house for more than 24 hours. WASTE N0T MOQT4 LAKE ELECTRIC ASSOCIATION |
