Show KVEL construction song writers honored at Chamber Humor still prevails in Vernal in spite of the Main Street Boulevard Construction Con-struction which has taken the better part of the summer. The humorous side of the event was shown Tuesday at Chamber of Commerce meeting when the winners of the KVEL Construction Boulevard song writing contest were announced. "We had 76 entries in the contest, which was held over a period of three weeks," said Steve Schmidt, program director for KVEL. There were seven states represented and one fish from Jones Hole also sent in an entry. Taking first place grand prize was the "Battle of Construction Boulevard" written by Larry White and Marti Gilmore. The song is sung to the tune of "Battle of New Orleans" and goes like this: In June of '79 the project did begin, They rounded up equipment and they started to dig in. They ripped up all our pavement and they dug up all our dirt. Now all the pretty girls don't have any place to flirt. We ran thru the rocks and we ran thru the gravel. We ran thru the detours where a four-by four-by shouldn't go. We ran over ruts till our cars self-destructed, self-destructed, And now we're singing songs over local radio. It's been three months and things are still the pits, 1 met a tourist yesterday naving quite a fit, Instead of finding Main Street, he found a detour sign. And driving through the bumps of town Was jarring up his mind. I met a fellow just today, who owes the city thanks. He's making lots of money, selling surplus army tanks. He said he hadn't seen the likes since 1944, Cause he was selling panzers in the Second World War. For their efforts White and Gilmore were presented the grand prize, a bag of construction boulevard dirt, $25 gift certificates from Ashtons and IGA, digital watch from Adams Jewelry, dinner for two at Casa Rios and two tickets to the Vernal Theater. Byron Merrell was first runner-up with "Main Street '79" sung to the tune of "Down in the Valley." For his efforts he received $25 gift certificates from Mode O' Day, Home Entertainment Center, a car service from Utah Motor, hair repair at the Hair Affair, four tickets to the Billie Jo Speers concert Saturday night. Second runner up was Claire Speirs who wrote "Side by Side". She received a $25 gift certificate from Ken's Sporting Goods and Sathers. Randy and Bonnie Howlett came in as third runner up with their entry "Hole in the Main" sung to the tune of "Home on the Range." They received an album of their choice from KVEL Radio and two Billie Jo Speers concert tickets. The winners were honored at Chamber in addition to the gifts. Chamber members were treated to a rendition of the winning song by White and Gilmore. According to Steve Schmidt KVEL plans to publish a book of the 76 entries and hopes to have it available for sale prior to Christmas. |
