Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah wins and loses contests with Duchesne County High Baseball was quite a popular sport in the second decade of the century but basketball was also an often played activity An article about the sport of basketball InVernal in inVernal Vernal follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Februarys February 5 1915 VERNAL LOST DEBATE AND BASKETBALL Duchesne High School at Roosevelt Defeated Uintah and Willcox Vernal lost everything in the contests at Roosevelt last Saturday night Both games of basketball and the debate were won by Roosevelt high school This is two straight winnings for that town The game of basketball between the Uintah Academy and Roosevelt boys is said to have been the most interesting and the swiftest that has been witnessed in this part of the state for a long time At two minutes before the whistle blew for the close of the last half the score stood 10 and 10 during the remaining time the Roosevelt team made a foul basket There was evidently some very brilliant playing on both sides TilE THE GAME between the Willcox girls and the Roosevelt girls was not so close the final score standing 16 to 8 in favor of Roosevelt The Willcox score or most of it was made during the last half Misses Sybil Woodard and Avice Johnson showed better form and succeeded succeeded suc suc- in helping to run the score up In this game one of the Roosevelt girls made some sensational plays Viola Young daughter of George E E. E Young of Moffat made six field baskets or 12 out of a total score of 16 People who witnessed the work of this girl declare that tha t she sh is the equal of any boy player in inthe inthe the basin With reference to the debate the following interesting item was written by one of the bright young men of Uintah Academy The Duchesne high school debating team defeated the Uintah Academy team in their debate Saturday night on the question Resolved that the United States Stales should exempt all alt altof of her coastwise vessels passing through the Panama Canal from toll charges The Duchesne team composed of Glen Lambert Miss Anon ACton Sabey and Mr Eugene Harmston Harmston Harm- Harm ston affirmed the question while the Uintah team composed composed coni com com- posed of Mr Don pon Ashby Mr John Mease and Mr Reuben McConkie McConkle opposed Mr Rudy Mr Ray Hay Dillman and Mr Harden Bennion Dennion judged the debate Their decision was not unanimous WHILE RECEIVING ING I a nominal defeat yet there is a greater victory arising from defeat than the mere mere mer decision of 01 judges saying that we lost and that victory we claim No defeat is so great but what there is a greater victory with it We congratulate tulate the deba debaters of the Duchesne high If we cannot win we wish success to those that do We wish to thanks to i lall all of the good people of Roosevelt in appreciation of entertainment we received at their hands And we commend them to other communities for they have a wonderful spirit of unity and loyalty Another story about basketball and debate follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on March 5 1915 ROOSEVELT TEAMS SURE SUItE BIT HIT THE TilE DUST Seven hundred people were packed like sardines in the Uintah gym last Saturday night to hear the debate between the Uintah and Willcox academies and witness the bask basketball games The debate was exceptionally good the basketball games were fast and furious and the theair theair theair air in the building upstairs and down was about as foul as one would want to breathe The only ventilation to amount to anything came through two doors when they were open Inthe in inthe inthe the gallery Lots of people who were present felt bum next day THE TIIE SUBJECT for debate was Resolved that reciprocity between the United States and Canada would be beneficial to both countries John N. N Davis presided preside and OJ Bracken Ed J J. J Young Jr and J J. J Winter Smith acted as judges Avice Johnson Gordon DeMoisy De and John McNaughton of Willcox represented the side of the question and Pearl Oakley Johnnie Mease and Reuben McConkie McConkle of Uintah Uintah- represented the negative Two judges decided in favor of the negative and one decided in favor of the affirmative All An six of the speakers went into the subject as if they were veterans on the rostrum Their arguments were clean cut and convincing The Duchesne High School basketball team had not met def defeat t until last Saturday night on which occasion they received a walloping they will not soon forget The music of the splendid Roosevelt band the systematic rooting by the fifty or more and the pep and confidence to pull pun them to victory They went down though with flying colors From the very beginning when the boys' boys team went on the floor the Roosevelt Waterloo seemed to hover around Tim THE MOST sensational playing ever done by an individual individual individual in in- in Vernal was during the first half of the game when Fera Fern Hadlock of Uintah threw every field basket that was recorded The score the first half was 13 to 12 in favor of Vernal The final score was 28 to 22 in favor of Vernal The Willcox girls went up there with just one object in view and that object was to take the scalps of the crack players from Roosevelt They took the scalps It was expected that Viola Young the whirlwind from Roosevelt would repeat her work of previous games but she seemed to be unable to do it It would be a hard matter to tell just which Vernal girl did the hardest work They all did so sowell sowell well wen it would be a shame to singe one out Here are their names Sybil Woodard Avice Johnson Dorothy Leigh Mary Blankenship Marvel Curry and Lucile Munday The score at atthe atthe atthe the end of the f first half halt was 10 to 3 and Sand at the end of the last half 15 to 10 in favor of Vernal U y |
