Show III II FROM I I Ili li All I 1 ONE CELL 1 Cancer education The American Cancer Society's Public Education Program seeks to help people help themselves against can can- A variety of approaches communicate the facts about this disease to the lay public encouraging people to take action themselves to help i protect their lives TillS THIS TWOFOLD effort effort- is education-action-is carried out locally by volunteers who work I under the direction of division staff in Salt Lake City Volunteers can include doctors nurses lawyers teachers housewives community workers business people and many others A characteristic shared by all al is active enthusiasm enthusiasm en en- for the cause of cancer control All are trained to discuss the cancer problem and to help persuade others to take lifesaving actions The Society's Public Education activities are directed to two age levels adults and young people Adult Programs Adult education-action education programs spread the cancer message through meetings to person-to-person activities films and up follow-up supportive literature Group discussions provide way two-way communication com corn encourage personal personal personal per per- involvement The program focuses chiefly on six cancer sites which offer the greatest opportunity for saving lives by either prevention or early detection breast uterus rectum colon lung oral cavity skin Audiences learn not only the facts about these specific cancers but what to do to help themselves And wherever possible a a specific service is is' pr provided v ded so that participants participants' can act immediately while they are in the learning process and still highly motivated These services include helping people stop smoking instructions inthe in inthe inthe the technique for breast self self- examination tion screening examinations for cancers of the uterine-cervix uterine and colon- colon rectum Public Education programs are offered to adults in the three locations where they are most easily reached where they work in their neighborhoods through clubs and organizations Local input Needed This year the Uintah Unit of the Utah Division has pledged to reach 11 percent of the adults in Uintah County or people To accomplish this task several forms of help are needed 1 employers clubs organizations neighborhoods need to REQUEST programs 2 people giving programs on subjects related to cancer need to REPORT to the local unit and get free literature and other help so that the local unit can get credit for the audience participating and 3 people who want to help themselves and others stay healthy must VOLUNTEER some of their time Call or write to 9 N.
