A MC WIs The strength of the United States Stales over the themore themore themore more than years of our nations nation's existence has been its faithful commitment to the belief in the freedom of the individual Our founding fathers provided us with a system which has fostered individual rights and permitted maximum maximum max opportunity for all alt to participate in the governmental process Making that system work is the responsibility responsibility responsibility of each ch of us as citizens The spirit of the Jefferson and Franklins must be no less strong today Every American has a stake in the successful administration administration administration admin admin- of the nations nation's laws and in retaining the rights provided us under the Constitution Each of us must make a personal commitment commitment commitment commit commit- ment to make full use of the rights and obligation obliga obligations tion of living in a free society If the democratic democratic democratic demo demo- cratic process is to function effectively and to prevail prevail prevail- we must all play playa a part in it That r extends beyond taking advantage of our out privilege privilege privilege to vote If we feel feci strongly about a cause we must speak out and work on behalf of our belief We can ean be encouraged by what seems to be renewed interest in fully participating in the political process Increasingly citizens are writing calling and visiting with their elected representatives Increasingly they are arc actively working for causes in which they believe The late Robert Maynard Hutchins shortly before leaving his post as president of the the University of Chicago offered a message that sums up the American ideal How is the educated man to show the fruits of his education education education tion in times like these He must not acquiesce acquiesce acquiesce ac ac- ac- ac in iI injustice ustice nor turn his back on it when he sees it happening lIe He must cling fast to his faith in freedom lie He must insist that freedom is the chief glory of mankind and that to repress it is to repress the human spirit itself m r 1 |
