Show A Boiling Lake. - The great boiling lake in the island of Dominica is a curiosity. It is situated 2,500 feet above the sea, upon a forest-covered mountain behind the town of Rosseau, and is two miles in circumference. On a recent visit by a party of explorers, when the wind blew aside the dense clouds of steam and sulphurous vapors which covered the lake, a mound of water was seen fully ten feet higher than the general surface of the water caused by ebullition. The margin of the lake consists of beds of sulphur. Its overflow found exit by a very high waterfall. Here was seen a vast sheet of boiling water, from which clouds of white steam were continually arising, presenting a scene at once strange and sublime in the extreme. |
