Show NEWS OF THE WORLD London, Dec 11. - °It is understood that the President of the Council, and the Royal Geographical Society are considering a plan for a new Arctic exploration. It is also understood that the route by way of Franz Joseph's Land will be recommended but the mere fact of reaching the North Pole is not the main or even one of the principle objects of the expedition. It will simply explore the unknown area, north of the 79° and 80° of latitude. The society, while not inimical to the plan of establishing observing stations around the pole, can only consider them as subsidiary to the work of geographical exploration. NEW YORK, Dec.11. New York, Dec 11. - The electric light is again taking possession of the public mind. Edison says: I am preparing a test for the subdivision of the electric light and will soon have it all ready. There is to be no guesswork about it. We will know exactly the cost of everything before we go ahead. Because I have been a few months perfecting this thing, the public said I had failed. The light promised is better and cheaper, and these are two qualities that will kill the gas. Besides there is no dirt from my light, no danger from escaped gas or combustion. It is a clear, steady, unflickering blaze and possesses none of those disagreeable properties which the public has come to associate with the idea of electric lights gained from those distressingly alarming glaring balls which you see suspended in the front of theatres and other buildings. The difficulty has hitherto lain in the subdivision. A great many writers upon the subject have declared this impossible, but it is not, and I have proved it." "The electric light may be furnished at a cost of something like $300,000,000 less than it would have cost by the original method. I calculate that New York City can be lighted by my method at a cost of something like ? ,000,000, which is a very reasonable amount. My light will be perfected before a great while. I am working very hard at it."
