Show ARIZONA SETTLEMENTS. From a private letter we learn that the Saints in Brigham City on the Little Colorado river were released some time since by Elder Erastus Snow and others who visited the settlement and advised to seek a place more suitable where a better quality of land could be obtained. The past season has been a very poor one for farming, the land being so full of mineral which rises to the surface and kills crops or prevents grain from properly maturing. As there was little prospect of an improvement in this regard, and as much better land was obtainable, it was thought advisable to relieve those who resided there. Bishop Lake and others just visited the San Juan country to ascertain the facilities it possessed for colonization. The result of this expedition gave the opinion that a better abode could be found south of the present location. We here give the words of the writer: "We have not decided to what place we are going to move, but we have just received a letter from Brother Adams, one of exploring party describing some very good country on the Salt River, also on the Gila. They saw oranges and figs on the trees and flower gardens in bloom at Hayden's Ferry, nine miles below Johnsonville? on Salt river, on the 17th of November." Meeting? Eating? at one table had been postponed indefinitely according to the council of Elder Snow, thought the saints were advised to remain united whenever they went and to take the "United Order" with them. There was a large emigration the past fall from Utah; some were bound for Salt river, others for the Gila and San Pedro. It is to be hoped that the saints of that place will be successful in finding and settling in a place where they can have return for their labors and be able to produce the necessities and even the luxuries of life. |
