Show A GREAT HARDSHIP. A report from the south states that the inhabitants of Deseret, in Millard County, are in a most distressing condition. The settlement and farms lie? along the Sevier river, and are watered by means of a dam, which raises the water until it can be brought out ?? the farms. On Wednesday morning the strong south wind had broken up the ice on the river and it came roaring against the dam, which with the ??, finally gave way. The settlers are very gloomy and as the dam cannot, it is feared, be replaced so as to offer any benefit this year, the crop prospects are almost entirely blighted. The loss that will thus be caused, is estimated at about $?0,000. The people of Deseret are very gloomy, and their hardship is undoubtedly very great. --S. L. Herald |
