Show HOMICIDE. A correspondent of the Salt Lake Herald writing from Blake city, Emery county, gives the following particulars of a homicide: A man named Wm. Nugent alias California Bill, was shot and killed instantly by one Durily, on the 21st inst. It appears the two had traveled together from some point east of here, and from some of the railroad camps came down and partook of some benzine or Green River's best. They were at dinner with canned chicken, etc., and quarrelled over it. California struck Durily with a beef bone, which made the blood come. California assisted to wipe his face, said he was sorry and tried to make it up Durily saying, "that's all right bill," and afterwards left, saying he would go and see his partner. California said his partner was as good a friend to him as to Durily. Durily left and went across the river. There he procured his rifle, and came back after his man. He went past Farrer's Store with his globesight raised for business, towards Taylor. He there again met his man. California was warned of his coming with his rifle, and stepped out and told him to stop, which he did, but then advanced. California told him to stop; he raised his rifle. California commenced to shoot, wounding him in the leg. The other pulled his rifle trigger at the same time, killing California instantly; the ball struck him under the right arm and came out the left shoulder blade. Durily then ran across the river, passed the post office, and from there took to the timber. The citizens were soon in pursuit of him, and while they were hunting for him he went back to the post office and gave himself up. There was great talk of lynching him for a while. This morning Thomas Farrer and a guard started with the prisoner to deliver him to the authorities at Castle Dale. The remains of William Nugent, alias "California Bill," were disposed of the best the country could afford. For his short acquaintance here he was well liked by all who knew him. As near as we can learn his folks live either in Sacramento or Oakland, California, which we would like to know, if any information can be procured. J. T. F. |
