Show MRS. HARTLEY'S READING. On Wednesday evening last a good house assembled to listen to the elocutionary readings of Mrs. Elizabeth Lyman Hartley. Judging from the close attention and frequent applause, the entertainment was highly appreciated by all present. The lady has a naturally good and highly trained voice, very expressive features and good dramatic action. Her powers of instant transition from mirth to pathos, or from gravity to gayety [gaiety] are marvelous and produce telling effect upon her auditors. She rendered a scene from Macbeth with much power, but her finest effort was the lengthy poem by ?? Hamilton "What Would You Do?" Her rendition of this piece would be difficult to excel. At the close of the entertainment we had the pleasure of examining two fine gold medals, one for oratory and the other for oratory and elocution, won by the lady at the institution in Philadelphia at which she studied. |
