Show LETTER FROM THE SNAKE RIVER COUNTRY. Cedar Butte Island, Jan. 23d, ‘82. Editor Leader-Located on this island is a small organization of Saints of about fifteen families under the Presidency of Elder John R. Poole. The settlers have been here for over two years but, for unavoidable reasons were not organized until this winter. Pres. Merrill and Elder Hendricks of Cache Valley came up and organized us into a branch with a president, teachers, and home missionaries, your humble servant being one of the latter. We have a delightful location. We are all satisfied with it and our visitors aver to like it. There is room for more families. Wood, water and grass abound, and we made a success of raising grain and vegetables last season. Some of the grain was beaten into the ground by a bad storm on the 20th of June, but it sprang up again and made a fair yield. We have two small schools and meet ?? every Sabbath. We had a Sunday school part of last summer, and will commence again as soon as spring opens. We are building a house for school and meetings that will be 24 x 40 feet inside when finished. Lumber is our greatest want. Will you inform us through your paper of the cost per thousand feet for flooring and finishing lumber at which the Oxford and Smithfield mills will lay it down at Eagle Rock? There have been two deaths within the last six months; young children of Bro. A. N. Stephens. One couple have gone to Salt Lake city to get married. There was considerable outside element here when we came, but they are nearly all gone now. They do not like us very well, and we do not mourn their absence. Your brother, D. R. Carr. |
