Show THE AGONY ENDED.-GUITEAU FOUND GUILTY. At just five o'clock last Wednesday evening a dispatch reached the Leader office announcing the conviction of Guiteau. The Leader at once issued the following extra: "The following dispatch was received at the Leader office, Logan, at just 5 o'clock this Wednesday evening. The difference of time between Logan and Washington accounts for our seeming to get the dispatch before the verdict was rendered. A dispatch from Washington Jan. 23d says that at 3 o'clock Judge Porter concluded his argument and Judge Cox charged the jury. Guiteau was declared guilty at 5:30 by the jury." The jury could not have deliberated more than two hours, before reaching a verdict. This indicates how little grounds there were for the ?? the jury would disagree. Judge Cox has evinced throughout the trial, a desire to give the prisoner every ideal advantage, and to avoid affording the defense any grounds on which to apply for a new trial, and it seems unlikely that a new trial will be granted should it be applied for, as will doubtless be the case. |
