Show A TRAGIC ACCIDENT. On last Monday forenoon a fatal accident occured [occurred] in the mouth of Logan canyon on the works of the Logan and Smithfield canal. Brother James Smith of the Fifth ward went to the place named to contract for a piece of work on the canal. He with Brother Neils Hansen and another man were walking single file along the canal at a point where it skirts a high steep bank. Brother Smith was the rear one of the three. No one dreamed of danger or of an accident, when a stone rolled down the steep bank and struck Brother Smith on the top of the head, making a wound about two inches deep. The victim of the accident was at once taken home; he was insensible from the instant of which the stone struck his head, and lived only about 45 minutes after it. It appears that a boy named Kent was climbing the steep mountain side, getting fire wood, when he loosened the fatal stone. As it commenced to roll down, he thinking there might be men below, shouted repeatedly at the top of his voice to warn them to look out. Unfortunately, his warning cries were unheard by the three men. No blame attaches to the boy, nor to any other person. Brother Smith was an old settler in Logan, and a man who was widely respected for his sterling qualities. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his loss. We are informed that he was about ?? years of age. He was taken away with an unquestioned and an unquestioning faith in the gospel. A coroner's inquest was held before J. A. Leishman J. P., developing facts as above. The funeral services were held on Wednesday in the Tabernacle basement and were attended by a large congregation. On Tuesday evening the following resolutions were adopted by the Y. M. M. I. A. of the Fifth ward, of which deceased was president at the time of his death: Whereas, it has pleased Almighty God to permit to be taken away from us by accident our beloved president Bro. James Smith, therefore be it Resolved, that while we bow in humble submission to the will of God, we realize that we have lost a kind President, a fatherly advisor and a faithful defender of the principles of the gospel. Resolved, that we value his past diligent efforts in teaching us the principles of the Gospel, and in promoting our interests. Resolved, that we hereby tender our heartfelt sympathy to his wife and family in their bereavement. Resolved, that a copy of these resolutions be spread upon our minutes, and published in the Logan Leader and also a copy of the same furnished the family of the berieved [bereaved]. (Signed) E. B. ??
