Show Stream 9 by VERNON W SHIELDS OUR WILD LIFE RESOURCES ABE ARE BIG BUSINESS for years our nations nation s wild life wealth has taken a beating from big commercial interests big mon ey lobbyists and pol politics I 1 tics have always thwarted the sports mens efforts of obtaining more a appropriations p p r p r i a t 1 0 n s a and i i d better wild life 1 legislation e g i s la t i 0 n T the h e sportsmen of this nation are a bunch of saps if they do not make the most of what the hunting and fishing business means to local and national economy here are some facts that should flabbergast you 0 recent national surveys and es from authentic sources in dacate that the sportsmen are pay ing out their money at a rate of over four billion dollars per year for fishing and hunting expenses take a look at how this compares with other big bus nesses the de apartment part ment of commerce reports for 1946 show that the total retail sales of gasoline stations in that year added up to two billion billio n nine hundred and seventy nine and dollars this is about a million dollars less than sportsmen are spending retail liquor sales were les less s th than a n h half alf 0 of f wh what a t t the he s sports p 0 r t s m men e n s spent p en t w while hi le r retail e ta il j jewelry e w e 1 r y store sales were just approximately a fourth of the fishing and hunt ing business the annual outlay of hunting and fishing sportsmen is twice the total value of all the hogs on farms in the united states as reported by the bureau of agn agri cultural economics sportsmen s business is about eight times the total value of all the sheep in the country A breakdown of this survey showed that eight per cent of the sports sportsmen mens s dollar was spent for ammunition nine per cent for fire arms and only five per cent for fishing tackle transportation to and from hunting areas amounted to seventeen per cent meals and lodging eleven per cent the bal ance of the sportsmen s dollar goes for boats clothing guides dogs club dues and other stuff a man buys because he is going hunting or fishing the sportsmen s dog bill alone is equal to what the public blows in on football base ball basketball boxing and horse racing events fishing and hunting is big busi ness that is undisputable leg and congress make big ap prop nations of funds for agencies serving and advancing our trade and production we dont protest that but look at the little dinky appropriations to funds of wild life resources how do they compare compared 7 aren t we jo to have a pro onate consideration since wild life is as big a business or big ger than any other KLEPETKO HEADS DUCK CLUB at a recent meeting of the cas cassidy duck club mrs era ern est klepetko of bauer o 0 was elected president other officers elected were joe wells vice president ver non W shields secretary and trea surer jim evans and kenneth huntington directors it was voted to change the name of the club to the tom cran crandall dall duck club in memory of the late tom crandall who organized and headed the club for two years mr crandall was one of the truest sportsmen and conservationists that eeor lived the fishing and hunting fraternity today could use more men of his caliber it was certainly fitting that this club should be dedicated to his memory DOE PERMITS GOING SLOW to date only about sixty doe permits have been sold for the killing of doe in the west moun bains most of the permits sold so far have been sold to outsiders Apper antly the natives of tooele thoele county are getting so that they are not very interested in the lal kil ling of our doe deer that s a good sign I 1 am hoping that they don dont t sell many more however the of fice in the court house will remain open through the deer season or until the four hundred permits are sold TOOELE COUNTY RECEIVES MORE FISH last week several thousand more fish were planted in the streams of our county horseshoe spring in skull valley received a truckload of bass fingerlings sev eral era thousand trout fingerlings from the federal hatcheries at Spring springville ville were planted in clover creek vernon creek and settle ment canyon A few legal sized trout were also planted in south willow canyon vernon creek clover creek and ind settlement can yon these pl in tings were vere made by the tooele thoele wild L life ife federation cooperating with the fish and game department and the fed eral Hath cery mr henry miles president of or the tooele thoele W wild ild life federation tells me that they have had some of the springs in skull valley ana lyzen for food value and have found them to be ideal bass wat ers it is hoped that they will be able to get more bass planted in this area TRAP SHOOTING I 1 TO START SOON mr woody proctor chairman of the trapshooting committee ad vises me that they plan on start ing their trapshooting program in the very near future the exact dates will be e announced later |
