his wife elizabeth de do la mare tate at the family SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF JOHN WILLIAM TATE the subject of this sketch john W tate was born near fort lara mie wyoming on the esth daiy diy of august 1853 while his parents were crossing the plains on their way to utah his parents john tate and anne tate were natives of yorkshire england and were converts to the church of jesus christ of latter day saints through the efforts of joseph E taylor their conversion to the church occurred in the year 1849 and with a large company of other saints they left liverpool and their native land in the year 1852 they brought with them on the journey two children who died while their parents were waiting in a st louis missouri for the journey across the plains it was late spring of 1853 that they finally secured transportation to make the journey but so crowd ed was the company that the mother was required to walk much of the way and it was under these circumstances that john william tate was born at the time and place above mentioned john tate and his wife and their infant son resided in salt lake city during the first winter and in the spring of 1854 they moved to a new settlement which they named E T after ezra T benson a member of the quorum of the twelve apostles who had been given the leadership in this new settlement in tooele thoele county john tate was a thrifty man and soon acquired a small farm which he cultivated and on which he raised stock it was here that john will am tate spent his earliest childhood herding cattle on the nearby ranges and attending the school during the winter months when he reached the age of ten years his parents moved to tooele thoele city 6 at that time year 1864 tooele thoele was surrounded by a high adobe wall which enclosed what is now the center or the four main blocks in tooele thoele city this wall was e reeled to protect the settlers from the indians cattle had been stol en and difficulties had arisen be tween the red men and the white men john tate and his wife resided in tooele thoele until their death they had a large family of fourteen children eight of whom died in infancy john william george henry charles heber joseph see tree mary ellen and clara maria all grew to maturity and the three sons john george and joseph re sided in tooele thoele and have reared large families john tate died in the year 1898 and his good wife ann followed him a year later in 1899 they were god fearing people and reared their children in the faith which they had accepted john william tate resided con tenuously in tooele thoele from 1864 until reunion held at liberty park in salt lake city early in august one hundred family members 1921 six years before his death on february 22 1875 he married elizabeth de la mare in the en dowmont house in salt lake city fourteen children were born to them seven sons and seven daugh I 1 namely john phillip william francis joseph hyrum george lawrence mary alice ethel so phia clara elizabeth annie maud delia della mar luella esther leland stanford edith viola charles del mir and thomas theodore these children all lived to maturity and were married and reared large families at the present time the family of john W and elizabeth de la mare tate number 14 child ren seventy grandchildren great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren the subject of our sketch was ordained a teacher in the priesthood in 1872 he was ordain ed an elder in the year 1874 and in 1887 was called to perform a mission to the southern states al though he had a family of seven children and a wife who was in poor health his faith was chent to cause him toi to accept the call and proceed to his field of labor while laboring in the state of virginia he vigorously preached the gospel it i aas was at fh the e time when the missionaries in the south were sub ejected to severe treatment on one occasion while traveling with elder hendricks they were attached attacked by three men with shotguns who or dered them to leave town in order to avoid trouble they started back in compliance with the command but they had proceeded only a short distance when the robbers who had ordered them out over took cherim and fired their shot guns at yie two elders mr tate received forty buckshot in his clothing and legs and elder hen dricks was wounded in the legs and suffered much from infection that came as a result of the wounds and was required to use a walking stick until the time of his death after he had convalesced from this attack john W tate was granted an honorable release by president william spry of the southern states mission he re turned to his home and family but was engaged to the end of his life in the ministry john W tate was active in church work throughout his life he was a member of the young mens mons medical and physical organ which proceeded prece eded the Y M M I 1 A he served as secretary second counselor cou and first counselor and then president of the M I 1 A at d efferent times he later served on the tooele thoele stake board ol 01 the Y M M I 1 A in 1875 he commenced to work in the sunday school at tooele thoele as teacher and secretary in which capacity he served for ten years february 1892 he was appointed second assistant superintendent and served until september 1894 when he was appointed of the sunday school and served until 1907 he had previously been appoint ed stake clerk and ecclesiastical clerk in which capacity he served for 26 years he was ordained a high priest and set apart as alter nate high councilman Cou cilman july 29 1888 john W tate served as county clerk recorder and treasurer of tooele thoele county as well as city clerk and city recorder of tooele thoele city for 27 years he acted as a mem her ber of the board of trustees of the tooele thoele school district and served as secretary most of the time in the year 1891 mr tate was working in the old co op store which later was forced to close its doors and in 1893 mr tate as aisted by his sons joe and george started in the mercantile business i first peddling from I 1 door to door were in attendance and also mrs tate now 92 years old was an honored guest by her and later located in the little brick build ng just north of the old war burton home and which site is now occupied by the transcript bulletin later mr tate rented the old ao co op store building the tile business was afterward sold to stores and the building sold to the tooele thoele drug company john W tate was one of the most successful farmers and fruit growers in tooele thoele he was a pion eer dry farmer on the bench lands southwest of tooele thoele city although his opportunities to attend school were very limited he became well educated in the school of empen ence and was recognized as one of the best informed ormed men in the community the of his home was known and appreciated far and w wide 1 de in 1921 he and his wife were called to work in the salt lake L D S temple he in a clerical capacity and arid she as an ordinance worker in this capacity he labored until his death dath on july 16 1927 mr tate enjoyed the confidence and esteem of a large larg e circle of friends and business associates he was an honorable man upright children grandchildren great grandchildren and great great grandchildren in his dealings with his fellowmen and universally admired the success that crowned his life was due to honest effort and strict ad berance to the chest principles |
