Show 1 I . i Letters from Our readers .. . Dear Sam, May 1 take this opportunity to thank Mr. Meador, the board members, Mr. Wim-mer, Wim-mer, the teachers, and all of my fellow workers at Southeast South-east School for their concern, consideration and kindness they have shown during my years of teaching at Southeast School. It is with deep regret that I must resign my position as a teacher. I'll miss working with the children more than I can say! I'd like to thank the hundreds of children I have taught here, and their parents for the privilege and pleasure I've had in working with them through the years. They were the greatest! Thank you Again. Helen Fleming Dear Sam, Recent letters to the Times-Independent Times-Independent concerning the Mill Creek Dam appear to be creating an atmosphere of terror in order to prevent construction of the dam. The Teton Dam failure is the example being used by the letter writers to promote fear. These fear tactics are threatening threat-ening to deny the beauty of a lake and access to both forks of Mill Creek Canyon to all but a few backpackers who want to walk up the creek. Nevermind that a magnificent lake and access to the upper canyons would be denied to the old, the ill, the people that get plenty of walking and exercise in their work and are unwilling to hike, the crippled, etc. Without With-out the dam, the area would be closed to all but a privileged few with the health, leisure time and the desire to walk rather than ride. The scare letters, in addition to trying to frighten us, also insult us by stating that the dam is being built "to make t buck." Financial estimates of the dam refute this dishonor, able charge. Certainly most of us have no chance of "making a buck" off the dam. Moab citizens of many years state that the Mill Creek Dam has been a dream of Moab residents for over 50 years Obviously, present residents! as well as the oldtimers, can recognize the human benefits to be gained from the project. The chance of the dam breaking will be incredibly remote; however, the danger ( of floods is a genuine threat to lives and property. If the dam is not built then we really are courting disaster. We all know that there are problems to be solved to ensure the soundness of the dam. Why not solve the problems rather than building them up out of proportion? Obviously the extremely responsible re-sponsible people that are moving the dam to completion have noted the Teton disaster and will move with extreme caution in order to make sure that our dam is very sound and very safe. i Joe Stocks Dear Sam, I would like to congratulate the appointed Big Game Control Board for once again giving our area a hunt which will help devastate our deer herd. ' Last Wednesday, twenty people from Moab went to the public meeting in Price ' to request a five-day buck only hunt or, hopefully, no hunt at , all. The Moab people were backed by documented deer count statistics showing that the deer herds were at record lows, the support of Grand and San Juan County Commissioners, Commission-ers, and even the Fish and Game's own statistics showing that deer herds were down. ' According to the Big Game Control Board, the reason why they were unwilling to shorten the hunt ! in . ouri area was because it would piit too much hunting pressure on other areas. Therefore, I was not, ... surprised to find that ,our requests were ignored, but I was amazed to find that the Board once again put the heaviest hunting pressure on us by shortening the hunt in eleven neighboring areas. This ruling reminds me of the doe slaughter they gave our area in , 1974 when our area was the 1 only one open to doe hunting. We need to get the game control into the hands of people who are qualified; namely, the Fish and Game Commission, and away from an appointed board made up of representatives of the cattlemen, cattle-men, wool growers, forest service, a governor-appointed sportsman, and a Fish and Game representative who can only cast a ballot in the case of a tie. I would like to thank the Moab Sportsmen's Club, the Grand and San Juan County .Commissioners, Ken Silliman (candidate for state representi-tive) representi-tive) and Mike Dmitrich (state representative) for their effort in trying to save our dwindling deer herd. Let our deer herd have time to rebuild so there will be deer to hunt in the future! Dwight Johnston Dear Sam, This year we the people of the United States of America are celebrating our 200th birthday. Our country that ; struggled against great odds to become a free nation and over the years a leader in the world community. This coming weekend, the people of Moab will witness an event that they will never see again, a centennial Birthday; a milestone, that none of us will 1 be able to celebrate the nert time it comes around in 2076. It is great to have the activities that we are going to have, but they all happen on the day before, July the 3rd! Since the American people have always carried out the i tradition of a fireworks display on the 4th, this year should have a special significance. I realize that the 4th is on a Sunday this year, but this 200th 'celebration wUl never come again, and I believe that the firework display should ( have been planned on the day we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independance.
