Alcoholism is one of the most neglected problems in the U.S. 3. 57 of the adults and 42 of the youth in the U.S. are regular users of alcohol. 4. There may be as manyas 10 million alcoholics in the U.S. today. 5. Women alcoholics have doubled since World War II. 6. Less than 3 of all alcoholics are found in skid row neighborhoods. 7. Alcoholism costs the U.S. about $25 billion in lost work time, welfare, health and medical expenses, absenteeism absentee-ism and property damages. 8. 50 of all vehicle accidents involve alcohol. Eubanks concluded that local associations, counseling, and family members can be helpful in working with these problems. "People need to talk about alcoholism," especially espec-ially with the alcoholic, and see that there is a problem and offer to help," he said. |
