I " Hazel Rhae Gam Funeral Services Held For Hazel Rhae Gam Funeral services for Hazel Rhae Garn, wife of Senator Jake Garn, were held Saturday in the Bonneville Stake Center Cen-ter 1535 Bonneview Drive, Salt Lake City. She was born in Provo, Utah on May 14, 1936 to Wendell B. and Rhae G. Chipman and was raised in San Mateo, California. Californ-ia. On February 2, 1957 she married Edwin Jacob Garn in Biloxi, Mississippi. The mar riage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. An active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of, Latter-day Saints, Mrs. Garri served as Primary President of the Yale 2nd Ward in Salt Lake1' City and was serving as an advisor to the Aaronic PriesthoodYoung Priest-hoodYoung .Women of the McLean Ward, Oakton Stake at the time of her deth. Through her own experience with cancer, Mrs. Garn became be-came active in the American .Cancer Society. She was one of the original volunteers and Utah State Coordinator in the Society's "Reach for Recovery" Recov-ery" program and was accorded accor-ded their highest honor, the "Devoted Leadership" award in February 1974. She was a member of the Cancer Society's Soci-ety's Salt Lake County, Utah Division and Fairfax, Virginia Unit Boards of Directors and served on a committee in the District of Columbia Division. Mrs. Garn was also on the Board of Directors for the Salt Lake Community Mental Health Center, a volunteer for the American Red Cross and was active in other charitable organizations, as well as civic affairs. Survivors include her " husband, hus-band, U.S. Senator Edwin Jacob (Jake) Garn; sons, Jacob Wayne and Jeffrey Paul; daughters. Susan Rhae and Ellen Marie all of McClean, Virginia and Salt Lake City, Utah; mother, Mrs. Wavne (Rhae) Thompson, Sebastopol, Calif.; father, Wendell B. Chipman, Provo, Utah; and brothers, Ralph W. Thompson. Thomp-son. Rexburg, Idaho, Carl E. Thompson. McCloud. California Cali-fornia and Michael L. Thompson, Thomp-son, Sebastopol, Calif. Burial was in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or other charitable organizations. |
