Show Arches Will Feature Bicentennial Events More Bicentennial events are scheduled for Arches National Park the last weekend in August and over Labor Day weekend in September, according ac-cording to Canyonlands Superintendent Super-intendent Pete Parry. Mark Nelson will appear at Arches August 28 and 29. He will be performing at the Devils Garden Campfire Circle at 8 p.m. on August 28 and at the Arches Visitor Center at 4 p.m. on August 29. Mark is a performer of traditional American music. His music is the music of rural people --. old time square dance tunes, play-party songs, dance tunes from Ireland and Anglo-American ballads. For the past three years he has been living, performing and collecting folk music in Utah. The state's unique history has given rise to a most unusual musical tradition, combining elements of American string band music with the older English and Irish styles, as well as songs growing out of the Mormon colonization. Many Ma-ny of his songs are a living part of a thriving oral culture and the fireside is his stage. Also on the evenings of August 28 and 29 the Bill Evans Dancers will be performing per-forming at 5 p.m. at the Arches Visitor Center. Bill is one of the major young choreographers of our time. Bill Evans directs his dancers to capture the joy, freedom, simplicity and beauty beau-ty of traditional American themes. From Appalachia to Middle American and Utah, the dancers perform with amazing agility and grace. The appeal of Bill Evans Dancers is universal, delighting the devotee devo-tee and novice as well. Labor Day weekend (September (Sep-tember 4,5, and 6) the Deseret String Band and Human Ensemble Repertory Theatre will be performing at Arches. The Deseret String Band has specialized in the music of the West with all its diversity. Its five members play mandolin, diffle, concertina, Tia whistle, banjo, guitar, dobro, ho-drum, banjo-mandolin and the pump organ. The band has played for many audiences in the United States and Europe and has recorded several albums. They will also be playing for your pleasure at the Arches Visitor Center Sunday evening at 4 p.m. and Monday morning at 10 a.m. September 5 and 6. The Human Ensemble Company Com-pany resides at the Glass Factory in Arrow Press Square in Salt Lake City. The theme of their play is especially appro priate for our parks because it deals with the creation of the earth. Love, of the physical environment, of living things and between living things. The theme is woven through the drama. Music and dance enhance each performance. The Human Ensemble each evening of the 4th and 5th will be performing at the Devils Garden Campfire Circle at 8 p.m. |
