Moss, Federal and State Officials h Dedicate Utah's Bicentennial Uiahvav Representatives of the Federal Highway High-way Administration, United States Department of Interior and a Utah senator from Washington, D.C., along with state and local officials will be dedicating a 133-mile section of Utah's highway system this weekend. Governor Calvin L. Rampton has proclaimed U-95, linking Blanding and Hanksville, Utah as the state's bicentennial bicentenn-ial highway, to be so designated on future state highway maps and road signs. According to Jim Black, a member of the Utah Travel Council, and general chairman of the dedication activities, ceremonies will begin in Monticello on Friday, September 17, with an historical presentation at the Monticello High School auditorium. The program will begin at 8:00 p.m., with San Juan County Commissioner Eddie Boyle as master-of-ceremonies. The pageant is under the direction of Blanding school principal Pete Henderson. On Saturday, September 18, a motorcade will form in Monticello at 8:00 a.m. at the San Juan County Courthouse and proceed south to Blanding to merge with Blanding participants at 8:30 a.m. - -From B! .riding the motorcade will move to the Natural Bridges National Monument Monu-ment for a. dedicatory address by Utah Senator Frank E. Moss. Other speakers will include: Daniel Watts, Federal Highway Administration, Washington, D.C.; Chris Frand, U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C.; Paul L. Howard, Utah Director of the Bureau of Land Management; Michael Miller, administrative assistant to Utah Governor Calvin Rampton; Canyonlands National Park Superintendent Pete Parry; Blaine L. Kay, Director of the Utah Department of Transportation; Qem Church, Pan-guitch Pan-guitch and Samuel Taylor, Moab, commissioners of the Department of Transportation; James Yardley, Garfield County Commissioner and Darrell All-brich, All-brich, Wayne County Commissioner. San Juan County Commission Chairman, Calvin Black will act as master-of-cer-emonies. From Natural Bridges, the motorcade will proceed to Farley's Canyon on U-95 where a lunch will be served to participants at 1:00 p.m. According to Black, the lunch is being furnished by Bullfrog Marina, Halls Crossing, Wah-weap Wah-weap Marina and Hite Marina, the four marinas which serve the Lake Powell area. The actual ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 2:00 p.m. on U-95 at Farley's Canyon. Senator Moss, Miller, the commissioners from San Juan County, Wayne County and Garfield County, La Vaughn Cox, chairman of the Utah Department of Transportation and Kenneth Sowards, Vernal, chairman of the Utah Travel Council will be the participants in the ceremony. Following the ribbon-cutting, the motorcade travels to Hanksville over the remaining section of U-95, crossing the Dirty Devil River, the Colorado River and White Canyon over award-winning bridges. A watermelon bust and cold drinks will be served by Wayne County residents about 4:00 p.m ; .. -C. The dedication ceremonies culminate over 15 years of construction and more than $20 million in highway funds expenditures for a project Utah highway planners have envisioned as a trunk line in a "Golden Circle Network" of scenic highways connecting tourist attractions in Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. The highway provides motorists with a paved access to Lake Powell, Natural Bridges National Monument and other scenic and recreational attractions in southeastern Utah. It also serves as a connecting link between Utah's five national parks. In a report to the President of the United States, U-95 is mentioned as an outstanding example of long-range scenic highway planning. "See feature story, Page CI. |
