Crossing Guards Improve School Children Safety Last fall the mothers and grandmothers of t Woman's Club of Green River became alarmed about the unsafe conditions condi-tions attendant on school children crossing the highway at Long Street. Failing to get a light at the crossing, because as the highway department put it. "There had been no fatalities there" the ladies recruited two crossing guards to take turns stopping traffic for the students. Since the crossing is quite a distance from the school, motorists are not aware that this is a school crossing. It seemed impossible to get proper markings, and the guards appeared to be the best solution. These girls, Mrs. Helen Milton and Mrs. Betty Smith, are to be commended for their faithfulness to the program, pro-gram, being on the job in the morning, again at noon and in the afternoon to usher children safely across the highway. Some of the youngsters, especially the smaller ones, have "had the word" at home, arid refuse re-fuse to cross until the guard convoys them over.
