Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Editor, Times Independent Moab.Utah Dear Mr. Taylor: I was one of those who attended the town hall meeting in Star Hall last Tuesday and I was extremely extrem-ely disturbed by some of the things that were said and done. One of the speakers, spea-kers, early in the evening, made an emotional plea for law and order and then asked everyone who supported sup-ported Chief Dalton to fstand up. I was one of those who did not stand up, not 'because I don't support the law and want order I do but because be-cause of the manner in which the matter was hanselled. hans-elled. The words of the question were: "Do we support our Police Chief?" but the vibrations dn the Hall asked, "Was he justified jus-tified in what he did last Friday night?" I honestly honest-ly could not answer that question at the time, and I seriously doubt that anyone any-one else in the Hall could, either. For it must be remembered re-membered that police officers offi-cers are also1 answerable to the law and all parties in the case, Chief Dalton as well as the people arrested, ar-rested, are going to be given- ample opportunity to defend their actions. Nona of them could be judged until all the evidence is in and certain basic questions ques-tions are answered. And there is only one place to legally and morally do this, and that place is not Star Hall, but in a court of law. I direct these remarks re-marks to all who have prejudged pre-judged the case, including those who lash out at the police chief with personal person-al insults. My feelings at the meeting; meet-ing; were reinforced by a letter appearing in last week's "Times Independent", Independ-ent", in which several dozen do-zen townspeople agreed that what took place on the River Road was not "an innocent little parfy" and that the "so-called innocent in-nocent ones" should be punished. This is a shocking shock-ing testimonial to the sense of justice of those who signed th statement. For despite our personal prejudices, fears, and hangups, hang-ups, the keystone in our jurisprudence system in this country is the tenej that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty guil-ty in a court of law. So I ask; all of those who signed the letter and stood up in Star Hall, to search their consciences and ask themselves again, "Were the people caught in the 'bust' guilty or innocent?" in-nocent?" If the pre-trial answer is guilty then I would suggest that each of them take a refresher course on the principles upon which this country was founded. Sincerely, J. F. Carithers Dear Editor: After listening to all the' rumors, the accusations, and the threats of impeachment im-peachment of the chief of law enforcers of our city, I'm ready to shut my eyes and close my ears. I had heard enough during dur-ing the campaign for the sheriff's office. Now I say to you, a better job of law enforcement could be done , if the campaigning had stopped after the election returns were in. We need a good chief of .police and a good sheriff, there is a purpose for (both. It is to big of a job for one man. Two- heads; are better than one, so put them together guys and give us our money's worth. Protect us and our children child-ren and stop fighting each other.
